Historia
The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

Characters well developed and performers are very good. A good read. But what a deeply disconcerting ending! Wahhhh

Performance is SO annoying
Revisado: 06-15-24
Ruth Ware is one of the most interesting and fun writers. I've loved all of her books, never could guess the end, always like the depth of the characters. This book is no exception.
But what a shame that it's over-performed to a point where I considered putting down my airbuds to order the print version. Every sentence is a strain, ends on an upward note. Gahhh. If you love Ruth Ware, and you haven't bought the audio version, I highly recommend that you read it instead.

Historia
From the frenzy of the 2012 Olympics to the aftermath of the Brexit referendum, here Jonathan Coe chronicles the story of modern Britain by way of a cast of characters whose world is being upended. There are newlyweds who disagree about the country’s future and, possibly, their relationship; a political commentator who writes impassioned columns about austerity from his lavish town house while his radical teenage daughter undertakes a relentless quest for universal justice; and Benjamin Trotter, who embarks on an apparently doomed new career in middle age, and his father.

Lovely book about some difficult times in England
Revisado: 05-06-23
This is a charming, well written book that, without righteous stridency conveyed the division in England during the years that led to Brexit. There’s kindness and sadness and also humor in the characters of this book. And a welcome, hopeful appeal for inclusion.

Sexist to distraction! Obsédé par les femmes!
Revisado: 04-06-23
There is so much about this woman's breasts and thighs, and low cut dress, and that women's wrinkles, and all of their strategies to snag the gorgeous man, also that girl who's so pretty whereas the boy is just a boy, that you may want to throw up. It's been a while since I've read such an openly and annoyingly sexist book. The story is fun though and told in an interesting way. The book is well performed but what can you do when you act the part of a man constantly ogling women?

Historia
It is three in the morning when Bobby Western plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the site are the pilot’s bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Either very masculine or insane
Revisado: 11-08-22
I just can't get into it. I've loved some of Cormac McCarthy books but this one is too much. It doesn't lend itself to be read because of the parallel stories of two characters which you can not figure out until you read a review of it and the storylines are explained. The male character portion is full of talk about cars, monkey wrenches, men who are men, and I drift off and away from the story which seems like it would have been pretty good! The woman character is a story of insanity and hallucinations and it feels a bit like a Fellini movie. Imagine being read a Fellini movie!
For a wonderful McCarthy book, read or listen to All the Pretty Horses!

April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Narration is absolutely awful
Revisado: 07-17-22
I haven't finished the book. It's difficult to get a sense of this story because the narration is so overblown that I cringe almost every sentence. I've listened to other books narrated by Imogen Church and have not had such a negative experience. It's almost as if she were tasked to make it last twice as long!

A basket of corn and chestnuts
Revisado: 02-27-22
It's a good story. What bothered me is the sense that the author gathered a thousand facts about the fifties to pepper the story through and through. It feels fake.

Two constant themes
Revisado: 10-28-21
I read the first Robotham book and resolved to read them all in chronological order. But there are unsettling themes that recur. The first is that every case the hero works on will lead to him, his family and his pets being threatened and sometimes really hurt. The second is that his characters, the ones that become victims, seem to always be young adolescent girls. So I'm going to read the 5th one and, if those two themes return, chalk it down to a bit of an obsession that I would prefer not to indulge!

A good way to write this story
Revisado: 12-15-20
I had planned to buy the book but, when I saw that it's the president himself who reads the audio version, I didn't hesitate. It's good to hear his voice again.
This is a good book and an easy read. If you followed those years well, you will enjoy the various timing of events, the back story of something you remember, his thinking. You will have a better idea of why some events unfolded as they did. And, if you admired him like I did, you will probably note his caring attitude.
Pretty much all the way through, I wanted to sit down and discuss issues with him, now that I know his thinking better. And so it's a good, gripping book that is hard to put down. I'd say I can't wait to read the next volume but that wouldn't be completely true. From this end, his second term was a nightmare for him.
