The carnage of unintentional pottery

A few days before I heard about this book, I was musing on how unfortunate it was that we hadn’t seen anything from Miranda for a while. I had no idea she had been laid low by a serious chronic health condition. In this book she tells us the story and walks through the things that helped her cope and recover. Like all self-help, it may or may not resonate with you (I admit it didn’t with me), but it’s Miranda, so you know the story is going to be entertaining along the way.

As for pottery, it’s just a moment in the book like many others where the images that she conjures up are distinctly Miranda and completely hilarious.

I enjoyed the first two books but this one was very hard to finish. The love triangle came out of nowhere and went nowhere. Jason behaved very stupidly at times, entirely out of character and unbelievable. But there are 15 books in the series at this point, so I have to assume that they get better again. I enjoyed the first two enough that I’ll give the fourth one a try and decide from there.

About three-quarters of the book is driving in circles trying to translate a single word. Then one of the characters steps away for five minutes and comes back with a full understanding of intergalactic law, including the subtleties of the aliens’ sacred, holy quests.

The character Lyle is particularly hateable. He’s basically an Internet troll who disagrees with every statement anyone else makes and constantly spouts self-contradicting conspiracy theories. The Audible reviews are worse than on other sites, so kudos to the narrator for fully bringing out his vileness, I guess.

They said you don’t have to enjoy sport to enjoy this book, and they’re entirely right. It’s full of the quite interesting facts and stories that are QI’s strength. Admittedly, coming fro No Such Thing As a Fish, it’s a bit strange at first hearing them read a book rather than have a conversation, so you may have to imagine moss saving the day or a Yeti competing in the Olympics on your own.

Listening to the audiobook version of a book that sprung out of a podcast is a no-brainer. We already know and love the narrators, and all the bonus material is a treat — extracts from the live shows, additional facts, and hilarious bloopers. You won’t believe what Dan found at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, but because James made a pun out of the mistake, you do get to find out.

It’s reasonably light on Tr*mp and Br*xit, and any mentions are indeed hilarious and minimally triggering.

Fad diets debunked

Since fad diets often start with a grain of truth, they can sound reasonable if you don’t put in the time to investigate the truth of their claims. Because who has time to fact check everything we hear these days? Here you can get the facts, from a reputable scientist from a reputable institution, with the bonus of being told in an amusing and engaging way. I was surprised at how far these diets stretch the truth: lemons aren’t acidic!?

I just wish the companion Audible Original interview series with Olly Mann was available in the US Audible store.

Dr. Yeo, thanks for subjecting yourself to the trolls to bring us this information.
