Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Great story, fantastic performance
Revisado: 01-07-25
The story is legendary. The performance by Newton is wonderful — she’s subtle but pointed (like Jane) and relishes Bronte’s remarkable prose to really flesh out the intellect, the humor, and the emotion.

Excellent dramatization WHEN SPED UP
Revisado: 11-24-24
I’m a huge Ellroy fan and this is a fine dramatization but I initially found the line readings flat and the narrator’s stylized readings annoying UNTIL I sped it up to 1.3x — and suddenly it came to life. Ellroy’s staccato prose is meant to be read fast and relentless like the thought process of his characters. Speeded up, the characters sound like they’re actually thinking and talking, not reading a script. Try it and you won’t be disappointed.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

Incredible performance.
Revisado: 09-26-23
Muller’s reading is ravishing - he voices every nuance of Melville’s crazy pastiche of tone, syntax, and meter. And yes there are a handful of audio glitches, some that occur at key moments. It’s all part of the Pequod experience.

Though he battled for seven years to marry her, Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn. She has failed to give him a son, and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile from the court, Anne stands starkly exposed, the focus of gossip and malice. At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down. Historia
So what would Al Gore choose if he had a book club? Gore named Stendhal's The Red and the Black, a 19th century classic chock full of adultery, betrayal, and moral vacuity, as his favorite book on a recent broadcast of Oprah. It's a bit shocking of a choice, given his wife and running mate's position on clean, wholesome literature. Listen and decide for yourself the merit of this presidential pick.

I definitely expected this novel to go in a different direction. But, like its protagonist, it seemed driven to drive off the rails. Fantastic reading by Porter—really subtle characterizations, great pace.

Historia
My Struggle introduces American listeners to the audacious, addictive, and profoundly surprising international literary sensation that is the provocative and brilliant six-volume autobiographical novel by Karl Ove Knausgaard. It has already been anointed a Proustian masterpiece and is the rare work of dazzling literary originality that is intense and irresistible to hear. Unafraid of the big issues - death, love, art, fear - and yet committed to the intimate details of life as it is lived, My Struggle is an essential work of contemporary literature.

Book Six: Our Struggle
Revisado: 12-31-21
The trickiest and most difficult volume of the series to be sure. Brilliant as always but at other times he seems to be slashing his literary face in perverse penitence. Regardless, a key to everything that came before. So weird to pity Karl Ove as much as one admires K-gaard. Ballerini’s interpretation is brilliant as always.
