Deeply moving and breathtaking journey through a Hollywood career told in didactic prose worthy of a master like Milch. NYPD Blue and Deadwood star Harney does a dead-on Milch impression, so much so I had, for much of the listen, presumed this was in fact Milch narrating (which, sadly, would not be possible given Milch's condition at the time of publication). I've listened to this book about a dozen times and quoted it to anyone who'll listen. A must-listen. If you are a writer or planning to become one, you simply have to own this.

Mostly things a true NYPD Blue fan would already know, a lot of it gleaned from the much better David Milch bio "Life's Work." The author's seemingly pathological hatred of Rick Schroder's Danny Sorensen character undermines his commentary with distracting rants (FWIW I found Schroder's unpolished line readings to be a remarkable artistic choice to sound less like an actor and more like an actual NY cop). Very thin commentary with little to no added insight. About a third of this isTV Guide-style entries. Avoid.

Holter Graham is an Amazing Narrator

The book is riveting, maybe the best of the batch all curiously released around the same date. The difference here is the book's narrator. Holter Graham brings Wolff's reporting to visceral life. Always engaging, at times poignant and hilarious, Graham puts to shame so many other narrators who seem oddly lifeless and robotic. In audiobooks, the name of the game is engagement. The book is awesome but, even if it weren't, it is worth the listen just for this extraordinary performance.
