The author excellently examines Col. Custer of course, but he carefully examines other important though less well known characters in the saga. This is a true cultural study of later 19th century Native Americans, woven into the Custer defeat. A great study.

Great explanation of Roman political interaction & intrigue with contiguous (and other) tribes, countries, provinces. But expect not “pilum” through an “oculus”.

This is a “young” legionary. His raspy, drunk-like narration makes it rather hard to follow the story. But he also speaks more and interestingly to Roman military tactics and battle strategy than other writers (if that’s your cup of tea). There is much introspection on the part of legionaries and the particular view of their methods of warfare. A bit humorous at times and rapidly moving, it deserves a “Salve”.

Jame’s Mace’s Next Victory

Mace’s obvious knowledge of Roman era history shows through again. Narrator Waters is eloquent with very few slip ups (“miles”, soldier, he pronounces “miles”, [files ‘files’], instead of “mee-lez”, the plural of which is “milites”. Does he do all the character voices? Truly a master. And if we want to be perfect, the Romans use “753 b.c,” as year “one”. Rome they held was founded in “753 AUC” (“ab urbe condita” (“from the founding of the city [Rome]). Jesus wasn’t age “2” in “one A.D.”. He was “754 AUC” according to the Roman. “AD” dating was devised in 525 by Exiguus. The was no “0 B.C.” Mace’s selective use of other Latin words is praiseworthy. He uses both “scutum” (shield) and “ scuta” (shields). Also “gladius” (sword) and “glaudii” (shields, in Latin). I’d be happy to be corrected.

Chapter 4, 15 minutes left, the narrator starts repeating text he had said about two chapters earlier. When Flavian is declared emperor.

The Roman War Machine is on the march again, living, loving and lancing. Aurtorius has been in the Legion so long that he’s been made a Centenarian. His Cohort, nicknamed the “butcher shop” continues to communicate with “nods”, “shrugs” and slaps on the shoulders or buttocks.

Artuius and his cohorts must once again teach the Jews just who owns Judea. His teaching tools are the gladius, pilum, and crucifixion. Aboard a ship, Lady Diana cooly de-hands a pirate with her gladius and drops him into a swarm of circling sharks. Victorious legionaries crucify the vanquished.

Much of the dialogue is mundane and of little relevance to the story: another Legion invasion of Gaul to teach the peasants a good lesson in loyalty. The battle scenes are ripe with the usual gore and carnage, down to a rebel’s eye receiving an on-target hurled pilum. The author certainly has done his homework. I just wish he could have found a more Latin-like word for “sergeant”. And the mesmerizing narrator can be forgiven for twice referring to Pilate’s daughter as “ClaudiO”. An exciting read and masterful presentation. Buy it.

This speaks much more to the culture, government, politics and religion of the Egypt of Napoleon’s time than it does to the French Emperor’s struggle to turn Egypt into a republic. Little of military tactics and battle is noted. Good read regarding Egyptian customs and politics, late 18th century. Spotty.
