Historia
On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol in attempts to overturn the presidential election. It was a betrayal of our Constitution, and one of the darkest days in recent history. Yet to former congressman Adam Kinzinger it was also the culmination of a cultural and political rupture he’d long seen coming. Constructive criticism from within the Republican Party was no longer enough. It was time to stand up, even if it meant betraying his own party.

An important story, well told
Revisado: 12-01-23
Adam Kinzibger has a good story to tell that is relevant to highlight the dangers to democracy in the world’s “indispensable” nation. He is a courageous individual who tells his story with self reflection and no hubris.

Historia
Drawing on a huge range of sources - letters, memoirs, conversations - Orlando Figes tells the story of how Russians tried to endure life under Stalin. Those who shaped the political system became, very frequently, its victims. Those who were its victims were frequently quite blameless. The Whisperers recreates the sort of maze in which Russians found themselves, where an unwitting wrong turn could either destroy a family or, perversely, later save it: a society in which everyone spoke in whispers - whether to protect themselves, their families, neighbours or friends - or to inform on them.

Very Personal History, Well Read
Revisado: 08-07-23
I loved the book and listened through it quickly. It covers a relatively narrow, but extremely interesting, fascinating and often incredible, period of Russian history y great depth, offering an abundance of individual “small” stories to illustrate how people pretty much like you and me lived through that time during which the soviet utopia became ever more dystopic. Very well read, with only the right amounts of inflection to let the strong emotion the text suggests, come through nicely.

Historia
Andrei Lankov has gone where few outsiders have ever been. A native of the former Soviet Union, he lived as an exchange student in North Korea in the 1980s. He has studied it for his entire career, using his fluency in Korean and personal contacts to build a rich, nuanced understanding. In The Real North Korea, Lankov substitutes cold, clear analysis for the overheated rhetoric surrounding this opaque police state.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Dreadful
Revisado: 02-02-23
Dreadfully written and badly read. The text is full of grammar, vocabulary and factual error (“Castilian is a dialect of the Spanish language spoken in the region of Castile”). I confess I was unable to go on listening past the Colombia chapters. The beginning is more or less bearable, but around the Chile chapters (absurdly pronounced Chilé by the reader) the book descends into what reminds me of an ignorant teenager’s history exam: a bunch of incoherent sentences containing loose and wrong facts strung together into an incomprehensible mess! Do not waste a credit on this, even if, like me you are very interested in the subject matter.

Historia
Touched off by a terrorist act in Bosnia and spreading all too quickly beyond the expectations of those who were involved, World War I was an unprecedented catastrophe with a ghastly cost. After this first "total war"-the first conflict involving entire societies mobilized to wage unrestrained war, devoting all their wealth, industries, institutions, and the lives of their citizens to win victory at any price - the world itself would never be the same.

Ask anyone about the significance of the year 1492, and you're almost certain to hear something about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the New World. But there is also a perspective on 1492 far different than the one most of us know-one that is more complete and complex. A 1492 when there was no country called Spain and no language called Spanish.

Comprehensive, balanced, brilliant
Revisado: 06-15-22
This was the first lecture series I listened to and it captivated me. Professor Ruíz is brilliant in his execution, the depth and breadth of his knowledge is amazing and his recounting of this little known side of 1492 is comprehensive, nuanced and balanced. Very enjoyable!
