The narrator's voice and tone were perfect for this story. I could not stop listening to this beautifully written, heartbreaking account of Darryl Hunt's false conviction for crimes he never committed. In the early 2000s, Zerwick's reporting helped bring the public's attention to Hunt's unimaginable plight. Now her book tells the story of Hunt's life, his suffering and perseverance, and his many defenders' efforts to secure his freedom in a culture whose criminal justice system remains mired by entrenched procedural injustice. From shoddy police work to unreliable witnesses, from the rejection of glaring evidence of another man's guilt to the nineteen years of life that Hunt lost in prison, this book casts a powerful light on racial injustice and on Hunt and his supporters' tireless efforts to finally see him and other innocent people released from prison and exonerated. What happens after Hunt is freed, celebrated, and awarded financial compensation forms yet another part of this gripping narrative. As Zerwick shows, the trauma continues after the battle is lost and won.

This amazing book is beautifully performed and kept my attention every step of the way. It's no wonder Whitehead won the Pulitzer and National Book award for this work. I highly recommend this title and recording about a young woman's search for freedom.

Beowulf & Heaney

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-09-08

This is a wonderful translation by Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney, born in Northern Ireland, whose own poems such as "Casualty" and "Graubale Man" connect ancient to modern violence in a way that indicates the poet's deep and intimate understanding of the cyclical violence that is so central a part of the 8th-century Beowulf. Other reviewers point out that Heaney omits certain key passages from his recording, and that is indeed a pity because some of those passages bring out the perils and contradictions of the warrior ethic to which Beowulf the characher subscribes. I suppose that the cuts were made for commercial purposes, that is, to offer a more univocally heroic Beowulf than the poem itself warrants. All the same, it's a beautiful read, and I would purchase this recording again, particularly if next time Heaney were to offer us his unabridged translation of this great poem.

Perfect Quijote

This is a wonderful recording of Don Quijote. The reader has a beautiful voice that makes the narrative come alive. I can easily grasp what Cervantes intended in the way of comedy, satire, and pathos. I recommend this recording for Spanish speakers and for those whose grasp of Spanish is good enough to understand Cervantes' written word. In fact, this recording would work perfectly for those wishing to follow along with the text.
