Excellent narration. Hard to even remember at times that this is voiced by just one person. Thank you Pike for bringing your craft to these books!

Historia
Structured in three parts, each recounting a new expedition, there are some long-awaited answers here, to be sure, but also more questions, and profound new surprises. Absolution is a brilliant, beautiful, and ever-terrifying plunge into unique and fertile literary territory. It is the final word on one of the most provocative and popular speculative fiction series of our time.

I’m looking forward to rereading the whole series after finishing book 4. An excellent piece that operates on a level that most speculative fiction authors could only hope to achieve.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Excellent hard sci-fi. I have little doubt this this work, alongside The Martian (I’ve not read Artemis, but now I think I will) will be highly regarded for some time to come.
I’d recommend The Martian first. They aren’t connected, but I think you’ll see why. Get the original reader, not the Wheaton one. (Though, yes, often Wheaton is great.)
Thank you Mr Weir. Please go right on writing! I look forward to enjoying whatever you decide next to share.

Sometime English major here. One of my all time favorite contemporary authors, and this my (so far) favorite work by her (of the half dozen or so that I’ve read). Start it and get into Part 2 before deciding whether or not it’s for you. But hell, if you’re the sort who judges a book before getting a third in, you’re probably better off sticking to genre fiction anyway.

Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West but worldwide.

Has the news cycle got you down?
Revisado: 01-16-19
Are you feeling pessimistic about the prospects for our species? Do you believe narcissism and harmful attitudes prevail and will continue to prevail?
If so, or if you see so many who are so downcast and aren’t sure what to say, I recommend this book.
Perhaps his writing isn’t the best. Perhaps he may seem heavy handed at times. But this work reminds us of what is true, how are reason is our greatest asset, and of what we are capable of when we meaningfully use our tools of kindness, compassion, and reason to guide our participation in the world and in those institutions that demonstrate what we are capable of as a species.

English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

One of my all-time favorite audiobooks
Revisado: 08-12-18
If you enjoy Harry Potter, and would love something more mature...
If you enjoy British literature, especially authors such as Dickens or Jane Austen...
If you appreciate the use of "magic" is great stories...
If you are a fan of Lev Grossman's Magician's series...
If any of the above apply to you, I feel it is highly likely you will deeply appreciate this book, especially the audiobook version. In fact, I consider the audiobook version of Clarke's book to be a finer experience than reading the book. I often _dissuade_ friends from reading this and instead tell them to experience the audio. So far, I've logged ZERO disappointments.
Hope you enjoy it!

This book is an excellent partner to Foster’s “This is Water”. Foster describes the importance of understanding how we choose to think. This book gives you tools to think well. Leave behind self-help guides, books like this will yield for more benefit.
