Historia
In the end, the only political systems that seem to work are those based on freedom. The Inner World leaders of the Terran Federation seem to have forgotten this simple truth. After fighting the Khanate - with the Fringe Worlds to supply the raw material and the fighting men - the Inner Worlds found it hard to give up the powers they had seized during the war.

Strange
Revisado: 08-26-24
The story is generally well delivered and some moralisation is interesting but many of the characters are completely irredeemable so following their stories doesn't hold any of the catharsis or satisfaction that most Weber books are full of.

The only thing I dislike is that there are probably no more sequels coming.
The conclusion wasn't what I expected and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. A little bit beyond what I can personally suspend disbelief for but all together pretty good. The characters are masterful but the stories are out there.

Historia
Lynx and the rest of the Cards are heading south. There's money in their pockets, beer in their hands and a simple job ahead - sun, sea and not getting shot at much. Throw in the prospect of a bar fight and it's almost a holiday. But the volatile Mage Islands are a powder-keg, one just waiting for a spark. A bloody-handed exile perhaps, or the agent of a foreign power preparing for war. Maybe even a bunch of trigger-happy drunks who've upset the balance of magic across the Riven Kingdom. Or all three together, that'd definitely work....

Honestly just reviewing this because I want them to release the fourth book in this format.
Great series. Great characters. Unique and interesting world. I didn't like the change in reader but I'm not picky.

Historia
There's a new card in the Mercenary Deck - one Lynx isn't sure if he's happy to see or not. The assassin Toil now wears the Princess of Blood on her jacket, and even Lynx would admit she's a woman cloaked in chaos and bloodshed. Their new mission is to escort a dignitary to the pious and ancient city of Jarrazir - beneath which lies a fabled labyrinth. Having barely survived their last underground adventure the mercenaries aren't keen for another, but Toil has other plans. Under threat of siege and horrors rising from the labyrinth, even the Mercenary Deck may have to accept that Jarrazir's prohibition laws aren't their biggest problem.

Historia
Lynx is a mercenary with a sense of honour - a dying breed in the Riven Kingdom. Failed by the nation he served and weary of the skirmishes that plague the continent's principalities, he walks the land in search of purpose. He wants for little, so bodyguard work keeps his belly full and his mage-gun loaded. It might never bring a man fame or wealth, but he's not forced to rely on others or kill without cause. Little could compel Lynx to join a mercenary company, but he won't turn his back on a kidnapped girl.

Historia
Long ago, a human astrophysicist, Inigo, began dreaming scenes from the life of a remarkable human being named Edeard, who lived within the Void, a self-contained microuniverse at the heart of the galaxy. There, under the beneficent gaze of mysterious godlike entities, humans possessed uncanny psychic abilities, and Edeard's were the strongest of all. Equally strong was his determination to bring justice and freedom to a world terrorized by criminal violence and corruption.

the void is pointless
Revisado: 02-08-21
The void, this stories namesake, is essentially worthless to the story. The happenings in the void don't appear to have any value to the story in any way shape or form until the very end.
Essentially half the book is a wish fullfillment fantasy that is describing the inside of what is essentially a plot device.
meh.
I probably will buy the third book and skip over most of the void content simply because I have audible credits stacking up.

Do not buy this book
Revisado: 12-14-20
I don't want to write redundant reviews for all of this abhorrent series so this is my warning to you.
There are enough somewhat interesting hooks to pull you in but it is not worth it. At first the world building is pretty great and you are thrown into an actiony adventure. The author kept writing new side plots in that detracted from the story and each one initially draws the audience in until it is revealed to also be worthless.
Unfortunately the characters suck in almost every facet, they are idiots who keep pointless secrets as a plot device and treat each other without any respect or empathy. For example: halfway through the full series a character is escorting a woman whose life he's saved multiple times and she starts having her subordinates throw rocks and feces at him because he won't give her his most prized possession.
The only reason I kept going through these audio books was because I was driving multiple thousands of miles for personal reasons and needed something to engage my mind while doing 10-20 hours runs on the road. I wish I'd just listened to baby shark on repeat. These books are absolute bottom tier garbage.

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Mildly cerebral. Interesting.
Revisado: 10-19-20
A slow, vividly descriptive story with generally few faults. Sticks within sciences established in the story and accounts for its plot. Doesn't follow the obvious story as I expected it but isn't exceptionally surprising. The author clearly spent significant effort making sure the puzzle peices fit together properly and didn't fall into the common trap of forcing plot points via idiotic character decisionmaking.

Good writing, good story, good characters, and interesting ideas.
The only detraction to the story in my opinion is the premise that sets the scene.
