Worst performance ever. The story held promise...
Revisado: 09-15-23
First, the narrator. She had all the emotional range of a potato list in the back of a pantry. It was flat and the cadence was exactly what you’d get from a weather forecaster. No. Scratch that. The weather report has more emotion.
Every sentence was read exactly the same way. Every character voice was read the same way. (Except the random throw away character from mid book) everyone sounded whiny when there was a rare attempt to give emotion.
I felt like I was listening to a very odd news report.
The story… well, it held a lot of promise but fell flat when it could have been taken to the next level.
There’s a lot of repetition in wording and in the plot, which consists mostly of the two main characters riding to her uncle’s castle for a vague and rather pointless reason, every single time.
While the female lead's background made sense, his did not. He was a human child orphan and a full-grown angel whose wings were taken for *reasons*, he had vampire vangs and fae/elven pointed ears and about half a dozen different backstories.
The female lead has “strong female character” dialogue but none of her actions back that up. Everything she tries to do, she fails and it helps no one. Not even the antagonists. So it’s pointless.
The leads fall in love when their only interactions are mainly the rides to and from her uncle’s castle.
There is no character development. They are exactly the same people they were at the beginning of the book, only in love with each other.
The end was filled with random new rules to magic, reasons for why things were that didn't make sense, about fifty different types of lore that did not mix well at all.
The plot could have had so much more depth, giving the leads some depth, but it all feels incredibly rushed.

Boring
Revisado: 08-10-23
The story felt meandering and the romance had zero chemistry at any point. She couldn’t tell the brothers apart unless it was the older two, and never the younger two. She was always quick to believe the wrong thing with zero evidence and the obvious in front of her face. The plot barely deserved a book this long and somehow still ends on a cliffhanger.
If you read the first one, save time and money and skip this one. The good stops at the cover.

Insufferable main character.
Revisado: 05-17-22
The main character is insufferable. She treats everyone disrespectfully, even her brother, who she'd supposedly do anything for. She ignores him when he tells her to stop and what he wants. She loses it, going way beyond hysterical, and attacks the male lead when she sees him walking with her brother and a woman she seems to trust upon first meeting her. And for some reason, everyone loves her even when they are temporarily upset with her. Though she doesn't even need to apologize and can keep making the same "mistakes" and bad judgment calls over and over and over, and still earns their forgiveness.
The male lead just randomly falls in love with her even though she's unhinged and keeps secrets just cuz she wants to and doesn't have any reason to. It doesn't make any sense why she expects everyone to just trust her when she doesn't trust them enough to tell them anything they deserve to know.
I also didn't understand how she went through the first third of the book acting like she didn't know what she did a few years prior, and then suddenly she just remembers all the details after acting clueless for so long. it doesn't make any sense for her to pretend to herself she didn't know any of it for so much of the book, only to spend the next third of the book, intentionally keeping every detail about it from everyone else and then slowly telling them a few details here and there.
And somehow the end of the book reveals that she's the most special snowflake to ever exist, and she acts like she also knew that the entire time. This could have been a great gothic story if the brother had been the main character and Letta just never existed.
The amount of time the word "litany" is used in this book is over the top. After a while, it felt like it was at least once a page or more.

A disappointment.
Revisado: 02-01-22
This was such a disappointment. What started out as a promising premise for a great story turned into an annoying adventure of a Mary Sue, who flirts with every single guy she comes across and nauseatingly flirts with them all. They all happen to be super good-looking and want to help her. After five seconds of knowing them, she decides she trusts them and spills her guts about everything. There's no tension because there's always a convenient way out of everything, she just happens to pass out nearly every chapter for days at a time toward the end. Calla "Mary Sue" Caldwell repeatedly calls herself nauseous, meaning “causing nausea” instead of saying she is nauseated. And I would have to agree. Her attempts at flirting with every male she crosses while constantly insisting she didn't feel comfortable about people she didn't know certainly made me nauseated. There were other cases of several other words used incorrectly as well.
The only saving grace for this book was that the narrator has significantly improved from her earlier work, though there were times I cringed at the cheesiness of it all. It was hard to tell if it was the terrible writing or the narration, or some unfortunate combination of both.

Beautiful!
Revisado: 01-27-22
Another beautiful story by Elizabeth Lim. I am sad it took me so long to finally read this story. The author has a way of painting with words that just draws you in. The world she created was so different than any other I've read, but it felt familiar like a memory from a long time ago. The small details that tie in with the Six Crimson Cranes world are subtle, but they enhance the story giving it even more depth.

These Hollow Vows is a fast-paced and surprisingly unique fantasy. When everyone wants something from you, it's hard to tell who your real friends are. The twists and turns and secrets are a wild ride. This book had everything I love about the fae.

Revisado: 01-26-22
I am so glad Garber decided to write this spin-off series because I've wanted to know more about Jacks since the end of Finale. I adored Evangeline from the start. She is wonderfully flawed. I love characters who follow their hearts and jump in without a second thought. I can't wait for the next book.

The premise was great...
Revisado: 01-25-22
The premise was great, however, the story fell flat. The conflict was not really there. You knew everything would turn out fine every time something happened. The terrible things that did happen felt far away, even when FL was in the middle of it. I couldn't connect with any of the characters or any part of the story, and the romance felt weird and forced... as if someone was forcing their dolls to kiss. By the end, I was left feeling incredibly let down.

Historia
Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as ravenous, hungry spirits. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who whisper about her scarred hands and troubled past. When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being whose extraordinary power almost consumes her - but death has come, and only a vespertine has any chance of stopping it.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 01-24-22
I am a huge fan of this author. All her books are wonderful. I enjoyed reading about a main character who seems to be on the spectrum. She's strong in different ways than your average leading character. Rogerson shows that even though she's the type of person society treats as less than because she's different, she, and anyone who identifies with her, has a lot to offer the world. Once prejudices and preconceived notions are let go, the person underneath shines.
The Revenant was another wonderful character, and I'm glad its part wasn't as minimal.
I enjoyed the narrator, who is very talented. However, she wasn't quite the right fit for this book or cast of characters.

Historia
In 2008, after recovering from a few years of hard drinking and harder drug use, after building back up a life as a successful and happy New York writer, Eva Hagberg woke up dizzy. She spent the next five years searching for a diagnosis, a treatment, and most of all an answer. In February 2013, an MRI revealed a mass in her brain. A blood test revealed an elevated tumor marker: A sign of cancer. And that’s when the second journey started - one grounded in physiology, in steadily rising marker numbers, and in the brutal invasion of a brain biopsy.

Revisado: 01-10-22
I loved the concept of this story but it was all told in a just over an hour and a half summary. I would have loved to see this story as it was happening with the character. I think it would have been more powerful to follow along with the main character.
The narration was wonderful.
