Historia
It all started when my brother, Paul, convinced me to go on one last family road trip across the Mother Road with him and my dad. Just like old times, right? Wrong. What Paul fails to mention is his best man, Porter, will be joining us, who just so happens to be my childhood crush and the man who broke my heart four years ago. What is supposed to be a fun family bonding experience across Route 66 turns into a war of pranks, awkward moments and bathrooms full of dirty flannel shirts and day-old beard clippings.

Why so gross?
Revisado: 10-15-22
this book had a nice storyline and I don't mind every day reality of situations being gross but it was way too much and I simply had to stop listening. I just don't understand why you would ruin a book by putting that many disgusting descriptions of things that nobody wants to hear about in your book.

Historia
In this remarkable WWII story by New York Times best-selling author John R. Bruning, a renegade American pilot fights against all odds to rescue his family - imprisoned by the Japanese - and revolutionizes modern warfare along the way. From the knife fights and smuggling runs of his youth to his fiery days as a pioneering naval aviator, Paul Irving "Pappy" Gunn played by his own set of rules and always survived on his wits and fists. But when he fell for a conservative Southern belle, her love transformed him from a wild and reckless airman to a cunning entrepreneur.

GREAT story of a true (mostly unknown) hero
Revisado: 07-03-22
If you enjoy stories of WWII, you will be thrilled. This is a story of a Pacific theater hero, not one of the darlings of media melded into history, but one of a simple, straightforward, tempestuous, driven, problem-solving warrior. His flair for angering chair warmers (he did not suffer fools gladly) probably had something to do with his story not getting more attention than it has. Thanks to John R. Burning for finally telling it (his forward gives the impression it was a labor of love), and doing so superbly. The publisher's summary does not do this story justice.

Revisado: 05-23-22
A hard to follow story becomes impossible to follow when the narration is poor. So many bad pronunciations, bad casting, odd character voicing.

Jud Lawson found me stranded in the rain. Broken down on the side of the road in a deserted neighborhood with my piece-of-crap car. I wasn’t looking for a hero, and definitely not one who looks like him. An obscenely hot mountain of a man who screams danger. But I have little choice other than climbing onto the back of his bike.

I’m that guy. Camilla Landry rustles against me, the silky fabric of her overpriced lingerie slipping along my bruised rib. The porcelain perfection of her skin is even more innocent against the colorful ink dotting my own. It’s demure meets damaged, pampered meets punctured.

Hero not so much
Revisado: 01-12-22
This was a well-written book and I've enjoyed the previous books in the series.
I almost quit reading this one because I had a problem with how Dominic denegrated Camila's family at every turn and treated her like she was a spoiled princess. The bigger problem is she tolerated this behavior. She was supposed to be strong and trying to be independent and then puts up with this treatment? Sad.

Historia
March 19, 1945: The war in the Pacific approaches its apocalyptic climax. The largest wartime armada ever assembled, Task Force 58, is closing in on Okinawa; once taken, it will finally put American B-29 bombers in range of the home islands of Japan - and victory. Trial by Fire is the gripping novelization of how, against all odds, the sailors of the Franklin were able to save their ship, after three agonizing days of battling the flames that ultimately claimed the lives of 832 men and injured 300 more.

Harrowing Tribute Well Written
Revisado: 10-30-21
True to the author's style, it puts you in another and momentous place and time, and makes the setting and the people familiar to the reader.
Not crazy about the narrator. He's skilled at his craft but had perhaps not quite the right gravitas for this particular reading.

A bit too, don't you think?
Revisado: 05-31-21
The epitome of smarmy, British self- indulgence. Darkness without a point. Literate nihilism without redeeming character.
Colin Firth was the perfect choice and is a great voice actor. The script, though.

I got half way through and realized it had become a Herculean labor, though perhaps without a respondent virtue. I wish I could write like Hemingway. I suspect so does Furst.
