Historia
Robert Caro's monumental book makes public what few outsiders knew: that Robert Moses was the single most powerful man of his time in the City and in the State of New York. And in telling the Moses story, Caro both opens up to an unprecedented degree the way in which politics really happens—the way things really get done in America's City Halls and Statehouses—and brings to light a bonanza of vital information about such national figures as Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt (and the genesis of their blood feud), about Fiorello La Guardia, John V. Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller.

A Hero Yes AND No
Revisado: 02-03-25
I got this book to look behind the curtain at the workings of government and the people involved, and boy did it deliver. It shows how just one key, early relationship with only a little talent and a little vision, can catapult one to power greater than pure merit, or who “got things done.” For if you never witnessed how a veneer of civility and charm can mask racism, stubbornness, and hubris for decades, see it all played out loud in one Robert Moses.

A History Lesson That You Did Not Expect
Revisado: 07-06-23
A surprisingly fair and balanced account of the reasoning behind armed defense versus nonviolence, given the book’s title. If one does reach a conclusion from such an honest analysis of two choices, it won’t come with difficulty. The choice is plain, except, without bias.
An important read for the 21st century.

Historia
Visiting Martin Luther King Jr., at the peak of the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott, journalist William Worthy almost sat on a loaded pistol. "Just for self defense," King assured him. It was not the only weapon King kept for such a purpose; one of his advisors remembered the reverend's Montgomery, Alabama home as "an arsenal".

Historia
By the 1890s, Wilmington was North Carolina’s largest city and a shining example of a mixed-race community. It was a bustling port city with a burgeoning African American middle class and a Fusionist government of Republicans and Populists that included black aldermen, police officers, and magistrates. There were successful black-owned businesses and an African American newspaper, The Record. But across the state - and the South - white supremacist Democrats were working to reverse the advances made by former slaves and their progeny.

A Harsh Accounting of History
Revisado: 06-02-23
This is a well told, harsh accounting of history, leading to an even harsher reckoning. It is noted mostly in the epilogue, which shows the recalcitrance one should expect, yet may be unexpected to ears uninitiated in American history; instead filled with mainstream’s propaganda of “truth and reconciliation.”
We know the truth, thanks in part to this book. We may not know that true reconciliation is impossible without restitution. that those post reconstruction blacks were robbed of establishing themselves left a gaping socioeconomic debt that carries its own legacy manifesting today. The author’s question of “do you forgive?” should never have been asked. It is not asked of any other people so displaced. The real question is, when will Blacks be remunerated. That genie cannot be put back into the bottle in Wilmington, or anywhere.

This is ex-slave Frederick Douglass' second autobiography. It was written after 10 years of reflection following his legal emancipation in 1846, and his break with his mentor, William Lloyd Garrison, catapulted Douglass into the international spotlight as the foremost spokesman for American blacks, both freed and slave.

Historia
If you really want to understand Jim Crow - what it was and how African Americans rose up to defeat it - you should start by visiting Mobile Street in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the heart of the historic black downtown. William Sturkey introduces us to both old-timers and newcomers who arrived in search of economic opportunities promised by the railroads, sawmills, and factories of the New South. He also takes us across town and inside the homes of white Hattiesburgers to show how their lives were shaped by the changing fortunes of the Jim Crow South.

Hattiesburg: an important slice of Black history

The last sentence of the final chapter wraps it all up with a bow, almost like an equation. But it is more of a lesson on the definition of progress. And proper focus.

Historia
Every facet of American life is being overtaken by big platform monopolists like Facebook, Google, and Bayer (which has merged with the former agricultural giant Monsanto), resulting in a greater concentration of wealth and power than we've seen since the Gilded Age. They are evolving into political entities that often have more influence than the actual government, bending state and federal legislatures to their will and even creating arbitration courts that circumvent the US justice system.

Historia
The Destruction of Black Civilization took Chancellor Williams 16 years of research and field study to compile. The book, which was to serve as a reinterpretation of the history of the African race, was intended to be "a general rebellion against the subtle message from even the most 'liberal' white authors (and their Negro disciples): 'You belong to a race of nobodies. You have no worthwhile history to point to with pride.'"

Rich history, poor reader
Revisado: 04-11-18
This reader mispronounces several easy words, including “detente.” It is not pronounced “detenté.” Listeners expect professionalism for the money. Furthermore, by no fault of the reader, a Black author writing on a Black topic at least deserves a recognizably Black storytelling: the reader sounds White. It is actually a distraction for the Black listener.

Historia
Think and Grow Rich is the number-one inspirational and motivational classic for individuals who are interested in furthering their lives and reaching their goals by learning from important figures in history. The text read in this audiobook is the original 1937 edition written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by Andrew Carnegie - and while it has often been reproduced, no updated version has ever been able to compete with the original.

Timeless
Revisado: 10-20-11
I downloaded the unabridged for a reason: I did not want a messed-with update and I like my information raw. Not unlike why anyone would want an unabridged version. There is another benefit to getting this unabridged version...it's hysterical!
The references to a bygone world and its expressions are borderline ridiculous. You'll love that they hadn't learned the word "resume" and call it a "brief." Or, that African-Americans are "Negroes." If you think 8-track tapes are funny, this book is calling radio an emerging medium. I mean, this is pre-World War II we're talking.
However, it is also timely. Napoleon Hill published this volume following the Great Depression. Here we are post-recession/post-bailout. A lot of what is true then is true now. And this is where the crazy-fun ends and the real purpose for this book begins. For a pocket-sized volume in print, or a couple of hours audio, the author manages to get "cosmic" and organic, all while keeping it elemental.
In his elemental breakdown, Hill keeps it straightforward, pulling no punches. It's the best roadmap I have seen on my success journey. This is the parent to all other success-based books.
