Historia
Billy Summers is a man in a room with a gun. He’s a killer for hire and the best in the business. But he’ll do the job only if the target is a truly bad guy. And now Billy wants out. But first there is one last hit. Billy is among the best snipers in the world, a decorated Iraq war vet, a Houdini when it comes to vanishing after the job is done. So what could possibly go wrong?

Donald Trump still living rent free in Stephen King’s head…
Revisado: 09-01-21
King is getting tiresomely political in his old age. Yes, he at least tried to depict the Marines of the 5th Regiment in al-Anbar province Iraq during the Fallujah conflicts. I was there, in that unit, and he did an okay job. Not great but… better than most maybe. But then his hero gets swept up in a quest to assassinate an evil media magnate (named Roger) that owns THAT RIGHT WING TRUMP LOVING CHANNEL (Fox), and avenge a victim of pedophilia… let me stop there. The constant Trump references snd snarky political commentary are things that King’s editors leave in to indulge him. If he weren’t who he is with such great earlier work and such massive sales, he’d have been better edited or demoted to hackdom and ignored. Maybe it’s time to put the “master” out to pasture. A decent book, but nothing special. Just another aging author in his dotage, not exactly phoning it in, but maybe not too far off from it.

Historia
It was the winter of 1902; South African park ranger Harry Wolhuter was on horseback, patrolling the area for poachers at Kruger National Park. Little did he know, he was also being stalked. Out of nowhere, two huge male lions pounced on Harry's horse, knocking the man to the ground. The horse ran off, leaving Harry to fend for himself. One of the lions lunged at him - piercing deep into his flesh and bones - and began to drag him far into the jungle to finish him off.

Compelling
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is one of those books that is guaranteed to get conversations going. The scope of the story is rather timeless. A great mix of natural history and political drama from a faraway land. Read it!

Historia
Shelby Sloane has big plans for the summer of 1981. She'll drive cross-country in her graduation present - a classic yellow Mustang. In California she hopes to find the mother who left her behind long ago and then return east in time to start college. Her childhood friend, Gina, is desperate to reunite with her boyfriend in Bakersfield and has convinced Shelby to bring her along. With Gina onboard, Shelby's carefully mapped out itinerary is quickly abandoned. Soon so is their "no hitchhikers" rule....

Compelling but bizarre
Revisado: 12-10-16
This book is a bit slow to start but picks up steam with time. The characters are very rich in that you will either sympathize with them or utterly despise them. The narration was excellent, particularly in fleshing out the characters' personalities (especially Gina who was just an awful person all the way through).
The plot was lurid but strangely prudish as well. It can't seem to decide whether to go for it and show us the dark side or tiptoe around it in a failed attempt at subtlety. It would have been better to either dive into the squalor head first or to avoid unsavory topics all together. The insinuation without consummation made for thin gruel at times. If we're going to do lesbian prostitution and faux snuff bondage, let's not try to pass it off as Little Women meets Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Overall a good read. Like a mutual fund, its worth doing if you have the time to delay some gratification until later. My two cents...

Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

Unlikable author

While it was an interesting adventure, this is a trite manifesto to utter self absorption.

Historia
Rusty-James wants to be just like his big brother, the Motorcycle Boy. He wants to be the toughest streetfighter on this side of the city, to keep his cool when things get dangerous, and to laugh when gang members challenge him to fight. Rusty-James isn't book-smart; he depends on his fists more often than his brains. So far, the Motorcycle Boy has bailed him out when his fists have gotten him into trouble.

Not the Outsiders by any means
Revisado: 06-10-16
Narrator appeared to have a learning disability. Story was equally stunted and drooling. Avoid it.
