With discipline enough to complete this 5/7 days a week, you will quickly learn beginners Hebrew. The repetition and order of exercises is of inestimable assistance. I’ve tried to learn Hebrew before on apps and with sleep book, but this is first time it feels like it’s sticking. Ah-nee may-veen kt-sot Ivrit!

Ed Sala is my favorite narrator on Audible. Too often Civil War campaign books are overly ambitious and demonstrate the extent of research as opposed to entertainment value. This book is not about the Atlanta Campaign or the Carolinas Campaign, but almost entirely devoted to the March to the Sea. A popular history filled with value-add primary sources, Sherman’s Christmas is a concise, but informative overview of the Savannah Campaign. It was so entertaining I finished it in 48 hours.

A well researched summary of the crisis largely made up of British accounts. Even though it is a British perspective, it is fair towards Argentina and especially praising of Argentine air defense. Also it avoids war crime name calling at exaggerated events such as the shooting of a British soldier under white flag at Goose Green or the order given to Argentine forces in Stanley to shoot any Kelper who gets in their way. Of course this order was not followed.

Also praising of the Argentinian grunt resolve and bravery over their commanders who largely stayed back of the front. I was also surprised that this was critical of Thatcher (fairly so) and I loved parallels to Johnson in Vietnam in terms of political/military differences in campaign aims.

The Battle of Goose Green chapter is Hollywood-level riveting as well as the entire runup to the isthmus fighting. I clipped multiple amusing quotes.

Only criticism is also a strength. I LOVED the Falkland Islander accounts and wish there had been more. I want to visit now. I have to.

I listened to each of the chapters twice from the first half of this book and I was shocked at how easily Vietnamese people understood me in HCMC and Hue especially. Had the most trouble with tone for restaurant pronunciations but for introductions and holding conversation long enough to be understood, it was really helpful.

Halberstam’s final work may be his best. As with all his books, it reads like a novel even though it’s nonfiction. For military historians though, orders of battle are clearly presented so this can be used as a research document as well. It sets up as a natural companion and prequel to Best and the Brightest. I can’t recommend it enough. This is instantly one of my favorite books I’ve ever read.
