Historia
The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would sell his soul and lose his son to the sky. My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother’s words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free. But freedom will require escape, and I’m a prisoner of my mother’s curse and my father’s greed. I can’t speak or make a sound, and I can’t wield a sword or beguile a king.

Story ok. Music during the narration is annoying.
Revisado: 07-26-20
The story is ok. That is damning praise because every other story I have read by Amy Harmon was over-the-moon great. They have left me thinking "seriously, how can a person write this well?" The Bird and the Sword was enjoyable and worth my time, but not in the same class as Amy Harmon's other work.
The narrator was talented and did a great job. I would give the "performance" at least four stars -- except for the music. It was annoying and distracting and made the performance worse, not better. What a bad idea. Please, don't ever do that again.

Good start, weak finish
Revisado: 04-11-17
I enjoyed the beginning of the book, which I thought handled pretty well the back story of the simpleton and the events leading up to his transformation. The latter half of the book seemed rushed and poorly developed, as if the author was just trying to wrap it up and get it delivered. That said, I enjoyed the consistent theme of redemption, even it it was handled weakly at times.

Historia
When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

Sci Fi Horror is not my thing.
Revisado: 03-16-17
The story started out fun and interesting, but then it took a horror turn, and that's where I put it down. I'm not a fan of horror, no matter how you wrap it.
The narrator did a great job, and I would gladly listen to anything else he has performed. Unfortunately his older-gentleman type of voice was a total miscast for the role of a sixteen-year-old girl. He did an amazing job nonetheless.

Cent can teleport. So can her parents, but they are the only people in the world who can. This is not as great as you might think it would be - sure, you can go shopping in Japan and then have tea in London, but it's hard to keep a secret like that. And there are people, dangerous people, who work for governments and have guns, who want to make you do just this one thing for them. And when you're a teenage girl things get even more complicated. High school. Boys. Global climate change, refugees, and genocide. Orbital mechanics.

Great story; Strong language

This is such a great story. I'm confounded though, by the author's frequent use of strong language in a story clearly aimed at teenagers.

Great story; Narrator is so-so
Revisado: 07-16-15
The story was fun and fast-paced, and often left me on the edge of my seat. I liked the complex interpersonal relationships of the main characters, with conflict and redemption. The narration was tolerable, but not great. The narrator puts strong emphasis on many words, but not always the right words. This happens most when he is speaking as the narrator. When he voices the characters, he seems to get it right. He does a good job of giving each character a unique voice.

When the young orphan called Pip encounters the escaped convict Magwitch, the child's life is altered forever - in ways he cannot even imagine. In the course of his story, Pip encounters such memorable characters as the eccentric Miss Havisham and her beautiful ward Estella - and a mysterious benefactor. This recording includes both of the endings Dickens wrote for this classic novel.

Not my favorite Dickens
Revisado: 07-27-11
Don't get me wrong. This is classic Dickens, with incredible characterization and a masterfully woven plot. Plus, the narration absolutely could not be better. There are other good narrations of this story, but Frank Muller tops them all. I just don't care for the principal character. A number of times he knows the right thing to do but fails to do it. He suffers the consequences, but he doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes. Also it lacks a happy ending (in my opinion.) Both of these are unusual for Dickens. I find it unfortunate that many students are offered this as their introduction to Dickens, when it is so uncharacteristic in these ways. So if you are a Dickens fan, you definitely don't want to miss this one, and this by all means is the narrator to choose. It's just not one of my favorites that I listen to time and again.

Anything narrated by Frank Muller is worth listening to. Beyond that, it's an excellent spy story, if a bit depressing at the end.

Historia
The Chuzzlewits are a family divided by money and selfishness; even young Martin, the eponymous hero, is arrogant and self-centred. He offends his grandfather by falling in love with the latter’s ward, Mary, and sets out to make his own fortune in life, travelling as far as America - which produces from Dickens a savage satire on a new world tainted with the vices of the old. Martin’s nature slowly changes through his bitter experience of life and his enduring love for Mary.

This is a wonderful novel with some especially colorful imagery at various points. The narrator is a little bland when speaking as the narrator, but his character voices are rich and varied, and leave nothing wanting.

Lots of fun! How could one go wrong with Austen? This story has some particularly funny spots. I must have looked silly driving down the road laughing out loud and slapping my leg.

Historia
Rule by head or rule by heart? Elinor Dashwood is a great believer in "sense," while her exuberant younger sister Marianne feels keenly that only "sensibility" (what today we'd call passion) serves to guide the heart. Through vicissitudes and, in the case of Marianne, outright betrayal by her lover, these two women learn the value in the other's outlook, and thereby prepare themselves for later domestic bliss that is the hallmark resolution of Jane Austen's novels.

Monotone
Revisado: 07-04-07
The monotonous narrator is very disappointing. Although she reads clearly, and has a pleasant voice, she has so little expressiveness. In fact, she sounds a little sad most of the time. The story of course is incomparable Austen. It deserves better treatment.
