This book feels like the result of so many things going wrong. The first book ended in a way that felt like it was going to be the albatross around this book's neck. That's not true. It isn't THE albatross, it is just AN albatross. There are so many problems here that the first one becomes almost lost in the crowd. The story seems to have no structure, fumbling anything that could be a dramatic turn and leaving it with no consequences. The political intrigue from the first book is utterly ignored, and while the romance in the first book was cure, this one takes up equal time but is utterly uninteresting. The antagonists seem utterly passive and incapable, leaving no sense of danger to anything that happens. To top it all off, the story does start to move better towards the end, but it is left with the same 'and everything worked out and went back to normal' ending that didn't work the first time. Maybe some of this could have worked better with more elegant writing, but everything is spelled out like the reader has no idea how the world works.
J.D. Jackson might be the biggest problem of all. I'm not the biggest fan of the first narrator, but he is so much worse. He reads this like it is a grocery list and can't pronounce a single non-English word (I get that some can be hard, but horchata? Seriously?) He even manages to mess up some English words, referring to Smasher and Shockwave as Shocker and Smashwave.

I liked this overall. Superhero worlds are nothing new, but the post post apocalyptic setting gives some original flavor. I was also pleasantly surprised that the book was willing to give a fresh criticism of these kinds of good vs evil stories. I'm always happy to see a queer norm book, or semi-norm in this case, and actually having more than one character is great. I enjoyed several of the twists but guessed them all far in advanced and could have done with less hints as it made the characters seem a little dumb for not figuring them out with so much evidence. That doesn't mean they don't work, just that they needed better implementation.Where the problem really comes in is right at the end. Everything goes back to normal? Really? If things had been left on a 'to be continued ' it would have worked much better. Good overall even if it didn't stick the landing.

While the story does get going after a while, by the end, it feels like the character is right back where she started. She starts self-centered and superficial and ends the same way. If there were more consequences for this lack of change, it may have worked, but she just breaks off her already dead marriage. Her kids are okay despite her abandoning them for months, there are no health reproduction from all the crap, she doesn't even quit drinking. There are moments where it works, but it is unbearable at the beginning and end.

When the narrator described herself screaming at her 12-year-old because he wouldn't talk to her then a few minutes later that same son was reading out an explanation full of sterile scientific explanations for his love of shoes, moving it away from any blame of his mother, I knew the story was going to come to the wrong conclusion. Yes, the boy is growing up and gaining independence, but a bigger reason for the separation is because his mother is forcing her way in for content. She writes from her life, and he is just more content to be used. I don't feel it is sweet, I think there is something more exploitative underneath.

If millennial was a slur, these two would be the stereotypical depiction. Their romance was pointless, they aren't interested enough for me to care, and instead of saying "just f*** already" I kept saying "just f*** of already".

A 21st century remake of Strangers on a Train isn't a bad idea for a story, but the concept is brought down by the execution. The story is predictable, and the characters are old stock. I thought we were past the chubby sweaty nerd, but I guess not. I guess that makes sense that since everything about technology in this book operates like it is magic. There could have been some commentary about modern tech here but heavy-handedness brings that down along with any thrills. Can't say I recommend.

This is a story about evil demons doing nefarious things... or that's what it wants to be. In actuality, it is a story about kind-of evil demons acting like they are doing nefarious things. That could be fun if it was treated like a joke, but it is played too straight. It could have worked straight if the demons were more of a chilling kind of evil or were clever, but that isn't the case either. The story tries to play it off like they are smart, but instead, makes everyone around them dumb. The last chance was the romance, but that is too shallow to get invested in. At the same time, it could have worked if it was purely physical and super spicy, but there was nothing beyond some slightly suggestive language.
All in all, it doesn't go very far in any direction and doesn't do anything well enough to be engaging or bad enough to be fascinating. Glad it is split up into parts so I can bail now.

While the world is interesting and the main conflict compelling, so much doesn't come up until the second half of the book. There just isn't enough time to come to terms with all the sudden rules, and I wonder why they weren't more spaced out.
The even worse thing that came up in the second half was the second narrator. This guy has the worst breath control I have ever heard! He gasped for air after every three words, and by the end, I wondered if he had a respiratory problem. The main narrator is fine, but second one is hard to get through

At first I thought the information was being introduced in a strange or nonsensical order, but it ended up working well with the theme and plot of the story. The panicked writing and jumping around truly feels like the inside of someone's anxious head. Not sure all the twists fully line up and one of the villains gets forgotten about, but the plot is otherwise solid and very engaging. The writing alone makes it more than worth your time.
