High hopes dashed
Revisado: 12-09-23
Positives: The narrator is the same so you begin with good narration and it brings you back to the great first two books.
Neutral: The story is not the worst thing I have ever read, but it really is not great…at all.
Negatives: Just not good. Why do we need to spend credits or money to find out that Bast likes sex with anyone, male or female, that he can get his hands on? That Bast likes to trick people. There is really no character development - everything we “learn” about Bast was in the books. Probably the most frustrating thing is Rothfuss patting himself on the back in the author’s endnote. He says writing is hard and then brags about how great he is at it, giving us stats with how many books he has sold, the signings he has done (including a 14 hour one), and famous people who like his stuff. Just an arrogant way to end a mediocre book.
Ultimately I keep hoping for The Doors of Stone, but instead keep getting disappointed. Everyone I know that loved his first two books has moved on and won’t buy any more. When this one came out, the things I heard were “I wish he would just finish Doors of Stone instead of writing more small books.” I decided to give this one a chance. I am sorry that I did. I do not plan on reading anything else that he publishes, possibly even including Doors of Stone, which is frustrating because the first two books were so good.

Great storyline
Revisado: 08-06-18
I really love this series and this is just another great read. After time hidden from the eyes of the world, people again try to screw over our adventurers. Have no fear, they are more than ready. There is great character development and the storyline has some resolutions from previous books as well as some great fighting. Read the whole series - it is worth it!

Fantastic Series
Revisado: 10-13-17
I enjoy litrpg books and especially the idea of following a character through their growth and development. This is the joy of any novel, but if you like role playing games and worlds of myth and magic, following a character's development is s much easier as you get to watch them level up.
There are many series out there and many attempts at making this genre good. Some include the crassness that comes along with playing rpgs late at night with friends. These are usually filled with middle school jokes and can even be highly sexualized. While some prefer this, I enjoy a series that focuses more on the character and story line.
Michael Chatfield does an excellent job in this series as a whole, and this book in particular, at bringing the reader in and creating characters that make reading this story arc incredibly enjoyable. The story follows Austin Zane (earth persona)/Dave ("game" persona) as he works through the world of Emerilia. Austin/Dave has to figure out how to balance life in the game with life on Earth as well as figuring out what he wants to do in the game. Austin/Dave makes choices that are unusual for most players of Emerilia. These choices give him really interesting options that may or may not change the face of the world of Emerilia for years to come.
I highly recommend this book and this series, as it is by far the best litrpg series that I have read to date. Keep up the good work Michael!!!
