Historia
After being expelled from their ancestral home in a not-so-distant future, Silvia and her mother finally settle at the Morningside, a crumbling luxury tower in a place called Island City where Silvia’s aunt Ena serves as the superintendent. Silvia feels unmoored in her new life because her mother has been so diligently secretive about their family’s past, and because the once-vibrant city where she lives is now half-underwater. Silvia knows almost nothing about the place where she was born and spent her early years, nor does she fully understand why she and her mother had to leave.

Interesting concept
Revisado: 09-18-24
I enjoyed the slow pace and relaxing nature of this book. The scenery wasn’t beautiful, but I enjoyed hearing the mind of a young girl trying to make sense of her surroundings.

This short story has an interesting concept. I appreciated the ending but could also understand how it could’ve been different.

Historia
In her late 20s, Cait Flanders found herself stuck in the consumerism cycle that grips so many of us: earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat. Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy - only keeping her from meeting her goals - she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year. The Year of Less documents Cait's life for 12 months during which she bought only consumables.

This story is bizarre but wonderful. The voice of the reader made it feel like a friendly conversation. The vivid and realistic characters made the story seem not so far-fetched. I loved this book and am looking forward to reading/listening to more from both the narrator and author.

Touching story of survival and reflection
Revisado: 08-30-22
Jodi has captured how we may have felt during Covid or any other great tragedy of our lives. She shows empathy in all of her characters who seem simple but are complex like real people. Not only did the story make me think-it was enjoyable. A perfect combination.

Great Performance
Revisado: 06-18-17
Clare Danes makes you feel like you are in the room with the handmaiden telling her story. Although the narrative is not true history, I appreciate the creative suggestion of what might happen during a reproductive crises. This make-believe history is s warning about forcing submission on particular groups. Let's hope society is more thoughtful towards equality in real life.

Intriguing story
Revisado: 04-27-17
This was for our book club "beach read". Although we have read quite a few books that have included WWII history, this story included it in a new and different setting. I liked that I didn't have to think too hard to get the plot, story, and themes. It was entertaining.
