This was awesome. So much fun. Tight story, great characters, and some truly creepy moments. Reminds me a bit of classic King. I loved it!

This was a lot better than I was expecting. It was fun and insightful, and gives one another entry point and perspective into the High Republic. I was braced for the so called SJW thing, but I didn't find it. There is a lot of trauma and grief in this book. The boys suffer the worse, and I found this story much deeper than I was expecting. It didn't seem like a typical middle grade book to me. If you are a High Republic fan this book is a must! Ireland is a great writer and this book is a fun listen. The Luminous authors are really exploring the Jedi's ideas around attachment and grief, and perhaps we'll see how we end up with Yoda and Obi-Wan basically telling Anakin to forget about his mother's torture and pain.

Absolutely wondrous. This story brought me to tears throughout the entire book. Irving Karchmar is the perfect narrator for this story. Deeply mystical and spiritual tale.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The idea of a mechanic female protagonist intrigued me so I gave this book a listen. It was an entertaining read. Despite all her hardwiring, Cinder is warmly human. She is smart, strong, and incredibly vulnerable. I wish the story's setting included more than the palace and Cinder's apartment and I was a little disappointed in how the ending left me hanging. Answers to secrets were revealed, but if you want resolution don't get your hopes up. Overall I give it a three stars.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Great Gatsby to be better than the print version?

This may be the most beautiful writing I have ever encountered. It is a perfect gem of a story. Jake Gyllenhaal does a phenomenal job of narrating. Listening to this audiobook with Mr. Gyllenhaal's dead on interpretation, may be more moving than reading the book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book was tons of fun. The writing was quick and evocative in an old style detective noir way, but with a down on his luck, broke ass, wise cracking wizard who in spite of having magic powers still seems like a normal (sort of) guy. I liked the narration. And, at only around 8 hours, it had a snappy pace and didn't drag on at all. It also made me laugh, which is always good when you're driving to work at 5:30 in the morning.

What did you like best about this story?

This was great. Just a little over three hours, but very insightful and helpful. I bought this for Vogler, but I ended up really enjoying Hague. His examples are excellent and he cuts straight to the heart of a great story. I learned a lot from this audiobook. Highly recommend it!

Where does What It Is Like to Go to War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book was brilliant! Marlantes is one of the preeminent writers of war for our time. After reading Matterhorn, which I loved, I listened to this. There were times I had to stop and take a break because it is quite heavy. Marlantes writes about killing, maiming, death, grief, shame, guilt, courage, loyalty and heroism. He covers Jungian philosophy, Catholic and tribal traditions, Greek myth and classical history. He has killed, been responsible for his own men being killed and has the self-knowledge, education and command of language to express the different states and emotions he has experienced in the past forty years. He is a warrior and a Rhodes scholar, and his scholastic background helps him communicate the experiences that normally transcend words. Marlantes has put a lot of though into this subject for decades now and has chosen his words beautifully.

His brutal self-honesty was shocking, and too me, took more courage than running head on into a barrage of fire. He lays his soul bare for all of us too see so that our society can learn from the perpetual state of war we seem to find ourselves in generation after generation and so that our warriors can return intact physically as well as emotionally and spiritually.

Nothing new until the UBL raid

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend this to anyone interested in Special Ops memoirs and the fight against terrorism or readers of military history.

What other book might you compare No Easy Day to and why?

This book doesn't really compare to any others. The first half gives us no new insight into the world of Special Ops or Seals that you can't find somewhere else. The author refuses to delve into his personal life and only sparingly describes his feelings. Personal accounts of the Iraq War can be found in greater detail in American Sniper or Lone Survivor. However, around the half-way mark, No Easy Day takes off as it describes the planning and operations of the UBL raid. No other book that I have read has covered this. It was fascinating.

Characters are drawn a bit thin and the writing is somewhat mediocre, which isn't surprising considering how rushed this book was to print. But the telling of the raid itself is riveting. I found the character Jen really interesting and wish we could have learned more about her, but as she is an undercover CIA agent, this wasn't possible.

The ending felt a bit incongruent as Owen laments how the identity of Seal Team 6 is leaked very shortly after the mission is completed. He goes on about the dangerous lack of anonymity, refusing to sign a flag for President Obama because he doesn't want his real name to appear, or how upsetting it was to him that the public came to learn it was Devgru that completed the mission. Then he writes a book about all of this and blows the lid even more wide open. I suspect the man is conflicted.

However, none of this overshadows the mission to capture or kill BinLaden and how successful it was considering the obstacles they faced at the outset, such as the downed helicopter. The Seals control of force is exemplary. I was certainly left to wonder if our enemies would be as protective of our women and children as Seal Team 6.
