Historia
Tim and Abi have always been different from their peers. Precociously bright, they spend their evenings in their parents' attic discussing the macabre and unexplained, zealously re-reading books on folklore, hauntings and the supernatural. In particular, they are obsessed with photographs of ghostly apparitions and the mix of terror and delight they provoke in their otherwise boring and safe childhoods. But when Tim and Abi decide to fake a photo of a ghost to frighten an unpopular school friend, they set in motion a deadly and terrifying chain of events.

Nods to Shirley Jackson and MR James!
Revisado: 11-09-23
Yes, it took awhile to get used to the narration, but if it’s too slow for you just speed it up - kind of a no brainer.
I loved the story and it really spooked me in parts. It is definitely atmospheric and slow building, so if you don’t like that sort of thing you may want to pass.
I adored the nods to Shirley Jackson and M.R. James and the setting of the English countryside in the 70s really made me think of the fantastic British supernatural tales of that era. In one part, the characters were watching one of the Christmas Specials on the Beeb!
It was recommended by someone in my Facebook M.R.James group and I’m really glad I listened.

Fantastic Read!
Revisado: 02-17-23
I can’t remember the last time I read a book that truly left me wanting more. Very atmospheric and creepy, yet I felt drawn to the characters. I loved the dichotomy between traditional religion and the old ways, and the way Mexico balances the two is truly unique.

Historia
Poet, forger, and genius, Thomas Chatterton died in 1770, aged 18. His death was thought to be suicide: But what really happened? Two hundred years later, Charles Wychwood and Harriet Scrope become obsessed with decoding the clues in an 18th-century manuscript. Their investigation raises some intriguing questions....
A century before, as 19th-century artist Henry Wallis paints his celebrated portrait of Chatterton lying dead in an attic room, he, too, becomes fascinated by the mystery. Then Chatterton himself steps forward, with his own story....

Tedious Characters
Revisado: 05-25-22
The story sounded interesting, but the author put too much effort into making his characters eccentric. This was very distracting, and left me wanting the story to move forward. I do not often give up on books, but I couldn’t finish it.

Fantastic read!
Revisado: 12-25-21
This hit all my favorite elements - a well researched historical mystery with essences of the supernatural, folk horror and medical history. I am now hooked on this author.
The narrator was perfect - the light Scottish brogue was enough to lend authenticity without being difficult to follow for my US ears. 😘
Highly recommend!

Be warned - Bodice Ripper
Revisado: 12-10-21
I couldn’t finish. From the summary I thought it would be a gothic, historical fiction piece with a touch of the supernatural which is ordinarily up my alley.
However, the main character is absurdly changeable and the story line way too focused on her capturing “her man”. No substance at all.
Hard pass - would not recommend unless you like gooey romances that spend a lot of time describing dreamy green eyes.
I did however enjoy the narration.

Fantastic Horror Story !
Revisado: 09-15-20
I never write reviews but felt compelled to write up this one.
For fans of horror, ghost stories and historical fiction this book is a must! I particularly enjoyed Andrew Pyper’s descriptive style - it was enough to make you feel you were there - but not over the top. It was incredibly visual - his prose guides you visually but also makes you feel and hear things like you are watching a movie.
The story is based on actual events and includes other famous characters such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and the notorious Fox sisters. The tie between the occult and the painful history of our country is fascinating. And the metaphoric significance of the evil side of the White House is spot on.
