Interesting story but narration kind of ruined it

I tried to get my mind off the narration and finish the book. And I did. But it was difficult. I felt as though the narrator was too light hearted. I don't think he meant to be. It's just his voice. Maybe just a poor choice. Different choices should have been chosen.

If it walks like a duck...

Loved the narration

The story got a little bit long in the tooth. It was predictable with a fairy tale ending. I am too old and too much of a realist to expect honeymoon endings. And that is what it seems as though I got with this book. Oh well. I did listen all the way through. I guess I thought it would pick up a threat or two and the story would start to flow. It did not.
Not to mention there are two different stories going on in the book. Two completely different stories. Maybe if I had been reading instead of listening I could have seen a chapter title that would have set the stage. But there wasn't one while listening.

The voices threw me off

I am not sure if I stopped and started one too many times, but what was going on with this book? The performance was not really all that great to my ear. Her take on an old time western woman was jarring. That alone was hard to take. One the plus side once we got to that voice I could pick up the story line a bit better.
I don't think a solid recommendation will come from me. Sorry.

Darcy finally confides that there have been robberies in London and Paris. It seems the thief was a member of the aristocracy and may have fled to Kenya. Since we are staying in the Happy Valley, we are well positioned to hunt for clues and ferret out possible suspects.

I suppose I am still not over the fact that there is a new narrator. But the voices she uses kind of get on my nerves. I find myself not ever paying much attention to the story line.
But, when I was listening to the story line is was quite boring. Not much of a listen this time.

By the write up I thought this was a book that was a must listen. I tried several days in a row. Stopped for a while. Started up for another couple of day. I can't do it. The voice of the narrator is just about putting me over the edge. I hate saying that, too. I'm sure she is a lovely narrator with any other book, but this one is a no. Sorry. Couldn't do it.

I listened to the book for a while without adding music. Once I put on the music that was being talked about the whole book came alive. I love Aretha Franklin. This book is not a long book but it does give you enough information to let you know who the woman really was. Her spirit, her passion all came alive for me while listened to this book.

Tim Curry does such a wonderful job with this Charles Dickens classic. Please do yourself a favor and sit and listen to this with your kids. It is worth it!
