Great Idea, execution -- not so much.
Revisado: 08-02-10
I am an Amy Tan fan, however this book was not one of her best. The plot was unusual, and had great potential, but the end result was less than satisfying. I liken it to a puddle rathan than a lake -- a thousand miles wide and an inch deep. None of the characters were developed sufficiently to cause me to care much about them (or even remember which was which). The three stars are for the innovative plot, and the information gained about Burma that I didn't have before.

Buyer Beware!
Revisado: 01-20-06
I purchased this book because I enjoy reading about Elizabeth I (and I had never read a Phillipa Gregory book before.) I will say that I gained something: I will not be tempted to waste time and money on another Phillipa Gregory book. I had expected that the strong character of Elizabeth I would prove a dynamic catalyst for this novel of the Queen's relationship with Robert Dudley. What I got instead was a simpering, ineffective and often pathetic Queen saved from herself by Dudley and her counselor Cecil, by turns. I am fully aware this was a NOVEL, not meant to be fact. However, I believe it does a tremendous injustice to her subject, and to all those people less informed about the real Elizabeth I, who will stumble on to this travesty and believe it to be based on fact. A novel depicting the complexity of the love, shared experiences and inter-dependence of Queen Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley could have been engaging, enlightening, and exciting. This novel is certainly not it. That being said, it was well written for a romance novel, so if that is your interest, go for it. I suppose it really matters little whose breast swells, and whose heart pounds.

Historia
In a rich and riveting narrative, Jane Dunn reveals the extraordinary rivalry between the regal cousins. It is the story of two queens ruling on one island, each with a claim to the throne of England, each embodying dramatically opposing qualities of character, ideals of womanliness (and views of sexuality), and divinely ordained kingship.

Fascinating
Revisado: 09-28-05
I was only dimly aware of Elizabeth I and not aware at all of Mary, Queen of Scots. This book changed all of that. I was well written, well narrated, and absolutely fascinating. It provided an alluring picture of the life of Elizabeth, a little less so for Mary. I became so absorbed, I have pursued the subject with other, more detailed (and less readable) histories of the two and the Tudor period. Highly recommend.
