clear, magical, inviting writing

this is some of the best writing I've ever read. the story is entirely compelling, but that's not what I love the most. for me it's the details and the honesty of feelings and thoughts of the narrator and Leela. all of the characters, what the narrator infers or guesses about them is bravely astute. this makes me want to finish the book I've tried to write my whole life. thank you Elena.

I listened to this after listening to The Covenant of Water. I didn't imagine that there could be another of his books that was just as astonishingly well written, captivating, and beautiful. I'm so glad I just went for it!

Writing is sublime genius

Meryl Streep doing anything is compelling, obviously, for us fans. When I read the premise of the story, however, it didn't seem that interesting and I put it aside. I am so lucky I found my way back. Listening has been delightful both due to Meryl Streep's performance and what turned out to be a story I didn't know that I needed to hear. The nuances, the surprises, the writing are entertaining, beautiful, and ultimately, like the best of novels, humanizing.

Timely inspiration

In the last couple of years I found myself telling those closest to me that I need something to be different. I told them I think, perhaps, it's more quiet and less stimulation. I wanted a dampening of the frenzy within and without. I hesitantly admitted that I am a big fan of daydreaming. I wasn't sure if I was driving my life anymore.
The stories and information in this beautifully written and well-researched book have given me a permission that I didn't know I needed. The book's message landed deep and I find myself making time for silence. That silence isn't always quiet!
I offer deep thanks to the authors. What a gift!
