What Saves Us
Revisado: 03-29-25
This book upends many commonly held beliefs about our food system, The author gets much closer to the actual boots on the ground reality than any other account I have read, not just to the problems but also to the solutions. It is exactly this kind of approach, that appreciates what is at stake for all involved, that will be the one that saves us. Only then can we converge on a better future for our food system, one that we all agree feels like redenption.

Historia
In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the OASIS, a vast virtual world where most of humanity spends their days. When the eccentric creator of the OASIS dies, he leaves behind a series of fiendish puzzles, based on his obsession with the pop culture of decades past. Whoever is first to solve them will inherit his vast fortune—and control of the OASIS itself.

Still smiling two days later
Revisado: 12-08-12
I looked forward every day to listening to this book! The story was innocent and wholesome. I grinned like a little kid through most of it. Listen to it if you're in the mood to get what you want, not if you're looking to feel complicated. I loved the narrator, he definitely grew on me. THANK YOU CLINE! WRITE ANOTHER ONE!

Historia
In this searing, unflinchingly honest book, Portia de Rossi captures the complex emotional truth of what it is like when food, weight, and body image take priority over every other human impulse or action. She recounts the elaborate rituals around eating that came to dominate hours of every day, from keeping her daily calorie intake below 300 to eating precisely measured amounts of food out of specific bowls and only with certain utensils. When this wasn’t enough, she resorted to purging and compulsive physical exercise, driving her body and spirit to the breaking point.

Depends on the reader
Revisado: 11-13-11
Recommendation of this book would really depend on the reader. Though it's engaging and thorough, at it's heart it's an account of an eating disorder. That either appeals to you or it doesn't. Many, many people relate to or mirror the thoughts and behaviors presented in this book. You may already know the ways an eating disorder can twist someone's life and you don't want to relive it. You may not want to think of it at all. But if you're unfamiliar with the disorder and would like to hear a woman tell you, in her own voice, the sort of power it can have, then I'd recommend this book to you without hesitation.

Historia
Every so often a love story so captures our hearts that it becomes more than a story—it becomes an experience to remember forever. The Notebook is such a book. It is a celebration of how passion can be ageless and timeless, a tale that moves us to laughter and tears and makes us believe in true love all over again . . .

I can't believe I'm saying this...
Revisado: 11-13-11
Movie > Book. The movie was beautiful! And the book was... disappointing. I actually think the love story in the movie was more touching. I felt like Sparks wrote the book as more of a businessman than an author, capitalizing on what he calculated that people would buy but didn't really put much feeling into it. There was almost no depth to the love story! I believe that this book went viral because of clever marketing, not because of its own merit.
Imagine a decently written story by a fourteen year old boy, who's never actually been in love and that's pretty much what you're going to get out of this book. If Sparks has been in love, he's keeping it to himself.

Can she really tell it from six angles?
Revisado: 11-13-11
No. But almost. Nobody can really know what goes on inside minds of even people closest to us (Picoult confirms this in her beautiful story.) Which is why I doubted she'd be able to tell an authentic account from the perspective of six different people. She didn't do so perfectly, doing a better job with the women and subbing in cliches where presumably her empathy fell short. But on the whole I thought it was remarkably convincing. The characters were lively and frustrating and wonderful. I cried A LOT.
The men in the book are somewhat contrived, but you're likely to forget about that as you get caught up in the Fitzgerald family and the dilemma that brings out both their strongest and most horrible qualities. You'll care about each of them from the start and fight yourself the whole way through.
