The best of Shaara's books
Revisado: 10-08-22
I've read several of Jeff Shaara's books and they're all good, but they have alternating periods of lulls and excitement. I tend to drift during the slower periods. Not in this one. I was engaged from start to finish, even during what could have been the very boring Pershing story. I don't get into the commander perspectives usually. I like the boots on the ground look, but this book was so informative about a war that I had such limited knowledge about, that every Pershing chapter gave me real perspective of the political maneuvering that lead to the wars end and how that resulted in WW2. There was a bad review I read that "the ground soldier was an afterthought" but I really think the book is written in such a way to give you a sense of the stalemate, tit for tat, senseless sacrifice of good men that the war ultimately bogged down into. The death of the red baron suggested a turning point and was reinforced by the entry of the Americans, which finally gave us the forward progress that ended the war. It would be impossible to tell a historical fiction and follow every notable character in a war. I think that was an unfair criticism and we got a decent diversity of perspectives that wove themselves together in a way that told a wonderful story. Shaara outdid himself and I can't wait to dive into the WWII series.

Historia
From the master of alternate history comes an epic of the second Civil War. It was an epoch of glory and success, of disaster and despair. 1881: A generation after the South won the Civil War, America writhed once more in the bloody throes of battle. Furious over the annexation of key Mexican territory, the United States declared total war against the Confederate States of America in 1881.

Good listen
Revisado: 09-17-22
Good research made for plausible alternative plot points. I have to say that painting Lincoln as a socialist was uncomfortable at first, to the point where I considered stopping to review the book prematurely, but events shape the outcomes and it does make sense that had Lincoln lived in a world where the federals had lost, he might have split the party and gone down that path, I also see where Turtledove is building the foundation for later books in which WW1 happens and how the confederacy might wind up on the right side of history while the US finds itself on the outs. It’s uncomfortable but had Robert E Lee’s orders never been dropped and discovered, this very well could have been the reality. Art should make one think, to sometimes feel uncomfortable. This book was art and should be regarded as such.

Political violence rips apart several towns in southwest Texas. A far-right militia plots to kidnap the governor of Michigan and try her for treason. An armed mob of Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists storms the U.S. Capitol. Are these isolated incidents? Or is this the start of something bigger? Barbara F. Walter has spent her career studying civil conflict in places like Iraq, Ukraine, and Sri Lanka, but now she has become increasingly worried about her own country.

Another Liberal Hit Piece
Revisado: 08-29-22
Just another liberal with TDS who can’t see past her own biases against the right to assign any blame to the left for the current state of affairs. It started off innocently enough, but that was just the bait and switch to give you the feeling of neutrality before she slams all things right leaning. I got 4 hours in. I didn’t bother to finish because I couldn’t stomach her clear biases.

Historia
The story of a student who went to extraordinary lengths - including living in a van on a campus parking lot - to complete his education without sacrificing his financial future. In a frank and self-deprecating voice, memoirist Ken Ilgunas writes about the existential terror of graduating from college with $32,000 in student debt. Inspired by Thoreau, Ilgunas set himself a mission: get out of debt as soon as humanly possible. To that end, he undertook an extraordinary three-year transcontinental journey.

Great story
Revisado: 08-21-22
I enjoyed this one far more than Trespassing Across America, probably because it was relatable. I think there is a desire in all of us to embrace our inner wild side and live simply. We’ve all felt the crushing burden of debt, and my can all relate to working a job we hate as well. While there was some political overtone, it wasn’t unforgivable this time.

Historia
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

I wanted to like it
Revisado: 08-06-22
I actually did like it, for awhile. However, when Bryson started to get into his disdain for southern people and displayed a complete lack of understanding for hunters and why they hunt, he lost me. I don’t know how anyone could write a book about the AT who clearly despises it so much. It’s a story of quitting. Not once, but multiple times. I actually found his companion, Katz, to be somewhat likable and moderately funny, but he spent the whole book deriding him. I have read a lot of books on the AT, but this is the first one that completely misses the spirit of the trail.

Gross
Revisado: 06-17-22
I’ve read a lot of memoirs about the Camino but this one is by far the dullest, least insightful, most depthless memoir filled with boring conversations, read as if someone was reading text messages to someone else. I don’t know how anyone could rate this as anything but one star and I don’t say that lightly. The only moments that break the monotony are the authors graphic descriptions of sexual encounters with a love affair thirty years his junior. Hence, the title of this review. Gross. He was free to pursue this encounter because he left his wife of 28 years because she wouldn’t live the life of a hobo out of a van with him. It’s hard to relate to the author or find any redeeming qualities in him. It was a grind to get through this one.

Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my audiobook, Yearbook for websites and shit like that, so...here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like.

Typical Seth Rogen
Revisado: 01-19-22
I have never been the biggest Seth Rogen fan but I’ve found most of his movies mildly entertaining. I just don’t relate to the drugs and raunchy sex lifestyle so when I found out he wrote a book, I thought it was an opportunity to learn about a deeper Seth. Nope, the character he plays in the movies is the real Seth. I rate this poorly because I had misplaced expectations. I should have known better.
