Engaging story, unlike able characters

Having read dozens of PA novels, I’ve experienced a wide range of characters and personalities, back stories etc. These characters were either unlike able or not overly compelling.
Towards the end (spoiler alert) when they were shooting up the innocent towns folk, I found myself thinking that these guys were losers. Only semi-redeeming value was that they had kids with them.
Won’t be following the series.

Great metaphor for a meaningful life

I really enjoyed this book and the narrator. The tale of Santiago chasing his life dream through trials and difficulties, making the most of mundane work and most of all - never giving up was both inspiring and engaging.

The author truly understands how to speak to the heart, how a call to adventure inspires and how adversity makes the journey more meaningful. I'm sure many great essays could be written about the value and poignancy of this tale, however my summary is that - everyone should read this book, contemplate their own life 'treasure' and in the words of another favourite author 'get it!' (Jocko).

Did Skippy cross a line?

I had a couple of laugh-out-loud moments and I don't mind admitting they were related to juvenile Skippy-Joe banter. The banter was okay, but did become a little tedious in this book possibly because the actual story felt a little haphazard and like very little was actually accomplished throughout. I realise it was a build up to book 3, it just wasn't as compelling as it might have been. I can't see myself purchasing Book 3.

It's been a while since listening to Book 1, so I can't remember how dominant skippy's condescending sarcasm was. In this book, there was a theme of all-knowing Skippy saying there's no way out of a bad situation, then Joe comes up with an idea, and problem solved (4-5 times?) Somehow Skippy continues calling Joe a brainless monkey (in 58 different ways) while Joe doesn't back himself by reminding Skippy how he'd saved the day many times. It became a little tedious and felt illogical.

Great post-apocalypse adventure story

I enjoyed the way the author made the main characters personalities and abilities relate-able while still being skilled enough to be the 'hero'. I lose a little enthusiasm for the story when nature provides the barriers to progress (falling building / flash flood) however the story was robust enough to carry me through.
All in, an enjoyable adventure well narrated (at my typical 2x speed).

Rusty’s book is both funny and informative. He shares a way to win left-right debates by choosing the degree to which you engage (avoiding the conflict when appropriate) and keeping in mind that total defeat of the opponent does not always mean a victory.

Engaging story, too graphic in places

Would you try another book from Joshua Gayou and/or R.C. Bray?

Sadly - no. I enjoyed the character development and story line, but found the crudeness and and some unsavory imagery handled in a way that left me feeling ill. I've spent a lifetime in construction and still found the volume of filth coming from Gibbs mouth WAY over the top. Too oppressively graphic and abundant. Gayou made his intentions clear with this in the prelude - he was 'uncompromisingly' making Gibbs character 'authentic' by turning him into an oral reservoir of excrement and thus alienated this reader. Dominated too much of the otherwise fun, engaging and witty story line. Bray was good, as always. Handles the character differentiation flawlessly.

Would you ever listen to anything by Joshua Gayou again?

Nah, seems too interested in impressing the 'tough as nails because i swear like a trooper' crowd. I prefer to be left thinking of the things the book taught me, the concepts delivered and the fun story presented. Not thinking that I need to wet-vac the slimy residue left in my brain - out through my ear canals.

What about R.C. Bray’s performance did you like?

Bray moved between characters voices flawlessly and added depth to the story.

Did Commune inspire you to do anything?

Buy a wet vac.

Any additional comments?

If you want to read a fun and engaging story of post apocalypse survival, community creation with decent character development and action - this series has that. In this instance though, your gray matter will be assaulted with uncommonly high volumes of crude imagery and language.

I found this book to be very insightful. Scotts wealth of experience coupled with presumably diligently sought insights into the human experience allowed a level of introspection and self awareness not previously experienced. recommended reading for one and all.
