Historia
The year is 1866; the American Civil War is at its height. Five prisoners of war hatch an audacious plan to escape their camp by balloon. After a perilous 6,000-mile journey in a fierce storm, they are ‘shipwrecked’ on an unknown Pacific island. What follows is a thrilling tale of resourcefulness, courage and suspense. Together with our heroes we learn to hunt, to make weapons and pottery, to calculate our position by the sun, to extract iron and even to make explosives from the island’s remarkable natural resources.

Couldn’t suspend my disbelief
Revisado: 05-08-25
I thought because it was based on a true story it would be mostly the actual things the survivors devised to survive. But as it got more and more fantastical with less and less time spent on actual details (smelting iron and then steel with no tools) i finally looked up the true story and realized this was nothing more than made up. Just to have a guy in survivors who arrived with an encyclopedic knowledge of chemistry, forging, botany, masonry… you name it. It was an exercise in making up the most extreme accomplishments someone could MAYBE achieve if they had all the then knowledge in the world at their disposal and even then it’s probably impossible to accomplish. Plus the narrator spoke like the “in a world….” announcer, over dramatic without change the entire way.
Gave up half way.

Historia
When an eccentric Englishman named Phileas Fogg makes a daring wager that he can circle the globe in just eighty days, it’s the beginning of a breathlessly-paced world tour. With his devoted servant Passepartout at his side, Fogg sets off on an adventurous journey filled with amazing encounters and wild mishaps. Pursued all the way by the bumbling Detective Fix, who believes the two travelers are bank robbers on the run, Fogg and Passepartout must use every means of transportation known to 19th-century man - including a hot-air balloon, a locomotive, and an elephant - to win the bet.

Amazing time capsule and adventure story
Revisado: 04-24-25
Although i enjoyed 20,000 leagues under the sea for its fanciful ideas and some that were ahead of their time, it feels to me like Around the World is more grounded in fact and also more mature in style. Maybe it was just the nature of the topic which was not sci-fi or maybe Vernes’ writing did mature over the five years since the other was written. I was amazed at the then-current events such as the condition of San Francisco, the recent issues with Brigham young, the still evolving state of Indians and buffalo and new railroad towns at that time, as well as all the other countries. It made me want to try a version of around the world now, though there may not be equivalent train and steamer options. Phineas Fog was such an incredible quirky character.

Loved everything about this
Revisado: 09-27-24
I loved the old time radio play aspect - i was privileged to attend one of the last old-time radio plays on a stage where they had the old sound effects and everyone sitting in front of microphones in the year 2001 in New York City. For many years I searched for another until I realized they just don’t do them anymore and gave up searching. But now listening to Tower 57 it was like the genre has been reborn in the Audible format.
That aside, the story was also riveting and filled my head with imagination. I loved the concepts, and the acting was great. The sound effects were well done. It was a real gem, very glad that I listened to it.
