Great Book Ignored
Revisado: 12-25-20
This is a great story and its a shame that it hasn't received the accolades it is due. Dufris once again gives a command performance and Robertson shows his ability to add wit and humor to a great story. Interestingly enough, this story acts like a precursor to the Exhibitionary Force storyline where there is an Alien AI and human interface.

Historia
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Just couldn't hold my attention
Revisado: 12-25-20
Not sure why, but this story just couldn't hold my attention. While some parts jumped out and grabbed my attention, it would slowly degenerate into basically background noise to me. Then later it would pick up only to drag me back down again.

Historia
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

The Start of a Great Series
Revisado: 04-08-19
While it took me awhile to get used to the narrator but eventually I found that he probably fit the character 100%.
I usually like characters that are somewhat self-deprecating and Eric is all of that. The book is also lightly humorous at times fitting in well with the overall dark nature of the book.
Overall, a great listen, and now that I have listened to all five, I anxiously await book 6.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

Book Title is Very Appropriate
Revisado: 04-08-19
I will not waste a lot of time reviewing this piece of "junk". The author apparently has a lack of vocabulary as it seems that a sentence can't go by without some major swearing/cursing, and his/her mind is so in the gutter, that I refused after making it halfway through this book to stop and walk away from it. And the narrator seems to want to get through this book as fast as he can as well, as he rattles away so fast at times to make him incomprehensible.
No wonder it was free.

The continuation of the story didn't disappoint.
Revisado: 03-22-19
Since this is really a continuation of book 19, it becomes another subset in the Modesitt Recluse Series. And while the listener may at times "anticipate" what is going to happen next, Modesitt does it without insulting ones intelligence. The only thing that bothered me at the end of the story is that for some reason, I feel like I have read somewhere in another book where it appears that the next book in this series should be picking up. Darned if I can find it, or why, but it keeps rattling around in my mind that I know I seen a part of this story before.

In the world of Recluce, powerful mages can wield two kinds of magic - the white of Chaos or the black of Order. Beltur, however, has talents no one dreamed of, talents not seen in hundreds of years that blend both magics. On the run from a power-hungry white mage, Beltur is taken in by Order mages who set him on the path to discover and hone his own unique gifts and in the process find a home. However, when the white mage he fled attempts to invade his new home, Beltur must hope his newfound power will be enough to save them all.

A Great Story dragged out.
Revisado: 07-28-18
Writers write in the long run, to earn a living doing what they love to do. I get that. And when I saw that Mr. Hayes was writing his book online and having a set goal of money to be received for each new chapter release I feared the worse. And, unfortunately, my fears were realized. A great story got dragged out to the point that it took a lot of fun out of it.
The story in itself was great. And had he wanted to make it longer, as he did, he could have spent more time developing the subplots that the story had, rather then dragging out each and every fight. For instance, in Vince's quest to win the intramural, I was so bloody mad that I was screaming at my tablet, "Just do ....". (didn't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet) And sure enough, that is how he wins the fight. And after all of these chapters, the ending was almost an after thought, leaving untold questions as to the remainder of the year, who finished as top dog of the class, and other items that Mr. Hayes built up through all 4 books. The one thing that the final chapter did was to set up a probable sequel to this series, which in my opinion, does a total injustice to this series as the sequel has to be set at least 17 years after the end of this book, leaving out a direct follow up to all of the characters to their lives after graduation.
All in all, it was enjoyable for the most part, fell short in some parts, and overly long in others.

Modesitt fails to produce
Revisado: 09-10-15
In this resurrection of the Corean Chronicles, Modesitt should have left well enough alone.
Right from its onset, one is wondering how events are occurring, or even why. How is it that Mykella "knows" something is wrong with the accounting books? Where did the Soarer come from that had all died out? And even its final ending makes you ask the question "Why didn't she do this earlier before all of the deaths occurred"? Mykella's whole demeanor throughout the book is disheartening, showing little or no "guts" to make a hard decision, or to take a stand for her beliefs. Instead she hides her failure by a "dear me, no one will listen to me so why bother" altitude. Sadly, it appears that Modesitt has already brought Mykella back, and I for one, will pass on it.

Another Wonderful job by Modesitt!
Revisado: 11-25-14
Once again, Modesitt has me chasing all of his books in another series!
Imager is well thought out, and has an even pace to it. While all of Modesitt's books tend to be recognizable in many ways by his writing style, and his attention to details that most other authors frankly don't do, (because they can't. I mean this guy knows details to crafts that I never even began to think about!), his new Imager series is a whole new look at fantasy magic and life in another time or world. While I have seen comments regarding these books as being somewhat disheartening, I am glad that I decided to check it out myself, and believe that this series is as good as, if not better, then the Recluse series.
My only complaint is that Modesitt tends to drop characters after 3 stories (he proves me wrong with books 4-7), and I hope that he will go back and revisit these characters from the first 3 books.

Historia
After years as a court magician and inter-dimensional hero, Skeeve needed a rest. So he took some time off to study magic and relax. When a few months later several members of the M.Y.T.H. Inc. Team each ask him to train some talented, young magicians in "practical magic" he has to agree. But after the assassins attack and a manticore tries to eat them, the Khlad mage soon discovers that there is more going on than learning. His students are preparing for a very deadly magical game and you won't believe where. Worse yet, the game may be fixed, and the only way to save his students lives is for Skeeve to risk his own.

Mythed the Mark
Revisado: 11-08-14
From the start of this series, Asprin had done an excellent job of storytelling and of keeping the reader in doubt as to the final outcome and direction that the end would take. Unfortunately, while I applaud Nye's carrying on of the series, she needs to develop the story a little better, and not make it obvious half way through the book what was going to happen.
The narration was for the most part fine, but I had a serious issue with the "female" voices. In fact, the first time I heard Bunny speak, I about drove off the road in total disappointment!
While I don't really like it when there are two different narators to a book (see Wheel of Time), in this case it would have been a massive upgrade to the overall enjoyment of the book. The publisher did do a very good job of blending together "joint" themes and statements by the characters when speaking in unison. If a little more effort was given to the female voice role, I would have probably rated its performance as 5 stars rather then 4. But I just couldn't take Bunny, Markie, or Tananada's voices at all.
