Historia
Quentin and his friends are now the kings and queens of Fillory, but the days and nights of royal luxury are starting to pall. After a morning hunt takes a sinister turn, Quentin and his old friend Julia charter a magical sailing ship and set out on an errand to the wild outer reaches of their kingdom. Their pleasure cruise becomes an adventure when the two are unceremoniously dumped back into the last place Quentin ever wants to see: his parent's house in Chesterton, Massachusetts.

Quentin takes one for the team
Revisado: 04-14-24
His quest finally over, Quentin has won his reward. But it's not what he thought it would be. The Magician King is the hardest of the series to date. It's not a story about kids anymore. Our magicians are grown up and face all the struggles of mature adults. They're ready to face real life, which can be lived anywhere, in glory, joy, grief, or the unexpected.

Historia
A dramatic and remarkable narrative of an extraordinary teacher's determination, from the author of the Sunday Times bestsellers The Tiger's Child and One Child. Torey Hayden faced six emotionally troubled kids no other teacher could handle - three recent arrivals from battle-torn Northern Ireland, badly traumatized by the horrors of war; an eleven-year-old boy, who only knew life inside an institution; an excitable girl, aggressive and sexually precocious at the age of eight; and seven-year-old Leslie, perhaps the most hopeless of all, unresponsive and unable to speak.

Not up to Tory Hayden's earlier works
Revisado: 06-24-22
I love Tory Hayden's earlier books, which generally focused on one child. "Just Another Child" was disappointing, in that it jumped from child to child and never approached the wonder she could achieve with elective mutism.
I personally found her work with children who had elective mutism fascinating and moving. "Just Another Kid" never reached the tragedy and beauty of Hayden's one on one work with fascinating and moving children with elective mutism.
Also I didn't appreciate the time devoted to an alcoholic woman assistant. If I wanted to read about alcoholic women, there are plenty of other good books on this topic. This was so far from what I expected from Hayden. I was extremely disappointed.
Of course this is just my point of view, having read Hayden's earlier work. If you enjoy reading about special ed classrooms and teachers' problems, you might love this book. If you think "Oh, another book by Tory Hayden!" you might well be disappointed.

Historia
Caleb Michaels is a 16-year-old champion running back. Other than that his life is pretty normal. But when Caleb starts experiencing mood swings that are out of the ordinary for even a teenager, his life moves beyond "typical". Caleb is an Atypical, an individual with enhanced abilities. Which sounds pretty cool except Caleb's ability is extreme empathy - he feels the emotions of everyone around him. Being an empath in high school would be hard enough, but Caleb's life becomes even more complicated when he keeps getting pulled into the emotional orbit of one of his classmates, Adam.

Even better than the podcast
Revisado: 12-06-19
I love The Bright Sessions, but being able to delve into Adam's and Casey's personal lives outside of the office gave a depth to their feelings and relationship that the podcast structure wasn't able to provide.
I hope that Lauren Shippen writes more of these stories, and incorporates more characters in each book. This was an excellent YA book. I'd love to hear a denser, more adult novel about the characters and world she's created in the podcast.
Still, this story was a joy to listen to, and the dialog between the two boys with the same voice actors as in the podcast was like hearing old friends that I hadn't realised how much I'd missed.
If you like The Bright Sessions, I can't imagine not loving "The Infinite Noise."

Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares.

One of the most chilling books I've ever read
Revisado: 12-18-18
I don't understand why this book didn't hit the bestseller list back in 2016 when it was written, nor why it's not still there.
FantasticLand combines horror with the reality of social media and the very worst side of American capitalism in a way that left me shaking and crying after I finished it. I stopped only to sleep. The novel is a combination of the very best of The Hunger Games and a brilliant commentary on social media. It grabs you from the first word of the author's note till the last sentence of the afterword.
FantasticLand is a new millennium version of Lord of the Flies, though its format and style is unique. I don't want to include any spoilers, but I will say that though it's a work of fiction, it could just as well be a true narrative of the best and worst of humanity and society.
If you like your horror frighteningly close to reality, don't miss this apparently overlooked gem. Just be sure to start when you'll have time to devour it non-stop. Also don't be surprised if it follows you into your nightmares.
I'd be remiss if I didn't praise the two narrators, who voice multiple characters so well you forget you're not listening to the characters themselves.

Historia
On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive, cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova - a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than 30 years.

Jump into a surreal reality and let yourself be swept away by the tide
Revisado: 03-21-16
This book is so brilliant it's header to knows where to start. Think film noir, characters so real they could leap out at any time, and a general sense of the difficulty of knowing what's real and what's not. Although the not real is very real.
The story chronicles three delightful and horrible people investigating the suicide of Ashley Cordova, d daughter of Stanislov Cordova, a reclusive director whose films are so terrifying that they've been banned by movie theaters and are seen only by a cult who literally watch his work underground in the subway tunnels of New York.
The three protagonists' journey toward the ambiguous truth is full of little plots so intriguing that the reader feels part of the story. We wander through magic, white and black, secret gender ambiguous gatherings, love stories, horrific stories, death and the richest of lives.
Every character the trio encounter is completely unique, strange, with their own versions of the truth. The novel is so rich it's like eating a gigantic chocolate cake. Or is the cake made of dirt, ashes, or illusion?
Night Film is not for the faint of heart, though it's impossible not to fall in love with the strange story. The journey is terrifying, sweet, heartbreaking, and completely engrossing.
The audiobook narrator is so good that all the voices are totally convincing. I would recommend this audiobook to anyone not afraid to enter a world of ambiguity so intense that they emerge forever changed.

Brilliant to hear a uniquely strange and rather wonderful story read by the uniquely rather wonderful author.
The interview at the end was also a pleasure.
Although it's best not to listen in bed when you are really tired. It took three or four tries to listen and not wake up in the middle of the night with headphone pain and realize I'd fallen asleep once more. I wish the ability to detect sleep breathing and stop playing would be invented.
