Historia
A riveting new account of Theodore Roosevelt's impassioned crusade for military preparedness as America fitfully stumbles into World War I, spectacularly punctuated by his unique tongue-lashings of the vacillating Woodrow Wilson, his rousing advocacy of a masculine, pro-Allied "Americanism", a death-defying compulsion for personal front-line combat, a gingerly rapprochement with GOP power brokers - and, yes, perhaps, even another presidential campaign.

Tough listen
Revisado: 01-26-24
Where to start. The story was not well organized or presented. The sound level was low so it had to be played hard. The actor mispronounced numerous words and was not engaging. Aurghhhh. Such a tough listen.

Historia
Lou Gehrig was the Iron Horse, baseball's strongest and most determined superstar, struck down in his prime by a disease that now bears his name. But who was Lou Gehrig, really? Lou Gehrig is regarded as the greatest first baseman in baseball history. Shy and socially awkward, Gehrig was a misfit on a Yankee team that included drinkers and hell-raisers, most notably Babe Ruth.

Revisado: 11-08-23
The Lou Gerhrig story is well known but rarely as entertaining as when read by Edward Herman. I made sure to listen at 1.0 speed as I was in no rush for this to end. Enjoy!

Historia
William Barr’s first tenure as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush was largely the result of chance, while his second tenure under President Donald Trump a deliberate and difficult choice. In this candid memoir, Barr takes listeners behind the scenes during seminal moments of the 1990s, from the LA riots to Pan Am 103 and Iran Contra. Thirty years later, Barr faced an unrelenting barrage of issues, such as Russiagate, the COVID outbreak, civil unrest, the impeachments, and the 2020 election fallout.

Got to love Bill Barr
Revisado: 01-07-23
Fearless and true. Bill Barr has a true north and does not waiver. Some of his believes are a bit further right than mine and his support for them shaky, you have to respect the man and his integrity. At many points in his life, Bill choose right over easy. His college experiences do not reveal a man who is just willing to follow the crowd. He stayed true to his beliefs and stood up to anarchy. When it came to the Lockerbie bombing, he never waivered or lost faith - he was going to get justice regardless of how long it was going to take. You have to love him.

Historia
New York state assemblyman, assistant secretary of the Navy, New York City police commissioner, governor of New York, vice president, and, at 42, the youngest president ever: in his own words, Theodore Roosevelt "rose like a rocket". He was also a cowboy, a soldier, a historian, an intrepid explorer, and an unsurpassed environmentalist - all in all, perhaps the most accomplished chief executive in our nation's history.

There as so many better books
Revisado: 08-23-22
I have really enjoyed learning more about Teddy Roosevelt. He was just a force of nature. That said, there was virtually nothing of note in this book that was not covered much better in other books. The author appears to be a great fan of Teddy and glossed over his polarizing characteristics. Teddy was flawed which did not come through in this telling.
Bottom line, skip this, you can find much better.

Revisado: 08-23-22
There were parts of this book I just loved and wanted to have written down and there were other parts that were a bit slow and repetitive. Overall, it was still a great book. I hope you will enjoy it as much as me.

In February 1969, the Beatles began working on what became their final album together. Abbey Road introduced a number of new techniques and technologies to the Beatles' sound and included "Come Together", "Something", and "Here Comes the Sun", which all emerged as classics. Womack's colorful retelling of how this landmark album was written and recorded is a treat for fans of the Beatles. Solid State takes listeners back to 1969 and into EMI's Abbey Road Studios, which boasted an advanced solid state transistor mixing desk.

Revisado: 08-23-22
This was such an entertaining look at the end of the Beatles. On the heels of "Get Back", this book puts a lot of things in a much better context. The Beatles were just so talented and George was coming into his own. Worth the listen.

Revisado: 09-27-20
I truly enjoyed 1932 by the author. Not so much this book. The author was, in my opinion, extremely critical of the president. He made statements of motivation that were a reach. There was a lot of wonderful material to work with and the author made the least of it. I only give thanks that the book ended.

A Tragic Sin of Omission and Lost Opportunities
Revisado: 12-02-19
Mr. Winik has crafted another spellbinding telling of a critical period in the history of the world. World War II was raging and while the Allies focused upon the conventional definition of war, another war against the defenseless was being persecuted against the Jews. This second war, the product of a sick culture, was coming to light to the civilized world with minimal actions. This was the true sin of the 20th century and Mr. Winik does a wonderful job of being together the history leading up to the events, the actions of the time and the failure to act against this crime. This was not the story I expected but one that will live with me. You won't finish the book feeling good but hopefully it will make you think more about what we could and should be doing today.

Historia
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

I was not expecting a play
Revisado: 04-24-19
Christmas 1914 was an incredible event. This account [Spoiler Alert] with the whole event based upon a man/boy too young to be a sacrifice to the gods of war was not what I expected. I was thinking that this would be a non-fiction account of the elements that led to the moment of sanity, not a contrived story with stereotypes creating a fictional account of the event. My hopes were too high as this, most certainly, did not reach them.

Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Just a sad book
Revisado: 02-14-19
The book is all about a tragedy that never had to happen. There are no great takeaways or lessons to be gleaned. Rather it is a story of how fragile the family structure is and how generations of good can be destroyed. The book went on and on and could not have ended soon enough.
