Interesting but
Revisado: 11-06-19
The theme is interesting and the representation of Asperger Syndrome is close to target in some ways. However, the story overall is depressing saved occasionally with interjections of humor. It has won several awards so maybe I missed the mark so you may need to decide on your own.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Penetrating Reveal if the Real World
Revisado: 02-03-19
The book revealed much about espionage, the Cold War, and the brink of war and all it was real. The nuclear option almost became more than a threat. From Moscow to London to Washington spies connected the dots and the story about this spy in particular sheds light on inner workings internationally and personally. Definitely a good listen!

Very Good But
Revisado: 01-12-19
Performance was very well done. Story was good but (spoiler) chapter 25 dragged a bit with too much detail for so much information and extreme action. Story line itself is very good. Definitely with the read/listen nonetheless.

Historia
On May 1, 1960, an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union just weeks before a peace summit between the two nations. The CIA concocted a cover story for President Eisenhower to deliver, assuring him that no one could have survived a fall from that altitude. But against all odds, pilot Francis Gary Powers emerged from the wreckage and was seized by the KGB. Award-winning journalist Monte Reel reveals how the U-2 spy program, principally devised by four men working in secret, upended the Cold War and carved a new mission for the CIA.

Lessons Learned
Revisado: 12-13-18
Very well written and narrated. The book is long in the telling but very much worth it if you are interested in that era of history. A lot happened during those years from Eisenhower to Kennedy and the book provides details of their thoughts about the program and their interactions with those involved developing the U2 including the film, cameras, and planes themselves. The politics are as interesting as the actual engineering and Area 51. In other words, it is much more than a story about Powers and the U2 although that piece is enlightening in and of itself. The Cuban missile crisis with a downed U2 and a lost U2 show the depth the author has taken for our learning enjoyment. He brings us up-to-date on events that went beyond the U2 and lesson learned. If you want a look inside technology, government, and spying this book is for you!

Historia
A landmark collaboration between a thirty-year veteran of the CIA and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, The Main Enemy is the inside story of the CIA-KGB spy wars, told through the actions of the men who fought them. Based on hundreds of interviews with operatives from both sides, The Main Enemy puts us inside the heads of CIA officers as they dodge surveillance and walk into violent ambushes in Moscow. This is the story of the generation of spies who came of age in the shadow of the Cuban missile crisis and rose to run the CIA and KGB in the last days of the Cold War.

A Great Read for All But Especially History Buffs
Revisado: 11-14-18
I held high expectations for this book and it surpassed them all. The story line is great only out played by the historical moments revealed e.g. Berlin Wall coming down was watched by our CIA and President on CNN. There is no fantasy here just several displays of honesty....good, bad, or indifferent. It presents a super story between two super powers trying out do each other. There are funny moments as well as deadly serious ones. It covers several years including those encompassing double spies who did great damage to the U.S. I have no doubt I will listen to it a second time...after I finish all those in my que now!! Enjoy it.

Slow Going
Revisado: 08-20-18
Looked forward to the story but it literally took 45 chapters to get going. Those chapters could have been condensed to 4 or 5 without losing anything. After that it gained momentum but still another 10 to really pick up. In short a great story line but too, too long in the making. Performance was solid.

Historia
In the wake of a dying man’s apparent suicide, the skeleton of a young woman is discovered on a windswept hillside. Detective Hjalti Hentze suspects that it is the body of a Norwegian woman reported missing 40 years earlier, while a commune occupied the land, and whose death may be linked to the abduction and rape of a local Faroese girl. Meanwhile British DI Jan Reyna is pursuing his investigation into his mother’s suicide. But as he learns more about her final days, links between the two cases start to appear: a conspiracy of murder and abuse spanning four decades.

Best of Three
Revisado: 08-11-18
This book is very well done in both story and performance. It is important to have read books one and two and essential to have read at least book two. The story in book 3 stands on its own but knowing the prior books helps with the flow. Some excellent twists and turns throughout none of which are beyond belief. The story telling is excellent with different voices and accents. This should be the beginning of a super series just like Bosch (Michael Connelly). In short, its an excellent listen.

Historia
When a group of international activists arrive on the Faroe Islands intent on stopping the traditional whale hunts, or grindadrap, tensions between islanders and protestors run high. And when a woman is found murdered only hours after a violent confrontation at a whale drive, the circumstances seem purposely designed to create even more animosity between the two sides. For Faroese detective Hjalti Hentze and DI Jan Reyna, the case quickly exposes personal connections and conflicts of interest.

Great Follow Up to Book 1
Revisado: 07-24-18
This book has a great story line and exemplifies the world wide difficulty police agencies face when local jurisdictions are negated by a National entity. The real story line however is a complicated murder with some great twists. The underlying theme from Book 1 continues but you don’t have to read in the correct order to enjoy this book. I have already downloaded Book 3. Performance was superb!!

Lots of Action
Revisado: 07-13-18
I liked all the action in the book for the most part. Although toward the end it dragged a bit by being “more of the same”. Nonetheless, I do recommend for anyone who likes an action packed story — you will not be disappointed. Ray Porter did an excellent job telling the story. I would have given all 5 stars except the last few chapters were similar to some prior chapters other than the characters involved. But as I said, I still recommend for a great read.

Historia
In an alleyway in Los Angeles, an old man, clutching faded newspaper clippings and gasping his last words to a cop, lies dying of a gunshot wound. The victim claims to be P.I. Elvis Cole’s long-lost father - a stranger who has always haunted his son. As a teenager, Cole searched desperately for his father. As a man, he faces the frightening possibility that this murder victim was himself a killer. Caught in limbo between a broken love affair and way too much publicity over his last case, Cole at first resists getting involved with this new case. Then it consumes him.

Who Is That Man?
Revisado: 05-21-18
Overall this book (Book 10 in the series) is well done. The story fades a bit now and again so that is why it earned a 4 rather than a 5. The ending has a nice twist to keep you guessing. James Daniels is a very good narrator making listening very enjoyable and engaging. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys mysteries and particularly if you are an Elvis Cole/Joe Pike fan. If not, you will likely become one.
