Historia
A bad best man’s speech can ruin a wedding. Why do we plan every detail of a perfect day and then give the groom’s idiot best friend five minutes of total power? Enter Nate (Glen Powell), a speechwriter-for-hire who helps people write incredible best man speeches. To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. That is, until he meets Dan (Nicholas Braun).

Plot meanders a bit but the performances are excellent and the script is actually very funny. Loved it.

Historia
When two childhood best friends blow up their respective romantic relationships, they make a time-sensitive pact: serial-cheater Chuck cannot sleep with anyone as she attends a three-month-long recovery group for cheaters, while sex-deprived Sofia vows to hook up with as many people as possible before recommitting to monogamy and tying the knot with her long-time fiancé. To keep things interesting, Chuck and Sofia decide to revive a past tradition from their summer camp days—also known as the dawning of sluthood.

Historia
When Kerry Cohen reached her early 40s, she realized she had a drinking problem - just enough to blur the edges of her life that had become a monotony of working, carpooling the kids to school, and everyday distractions. What she also realized was that she wasn't the only one. Lush is a gripping memoir that examines Kerry's struggles with alcohol, a struggle that a rising number of middle-aged women are facing. Wonderfully poignant and relatable, Lush follows Kerry as she attempts to rediscover the awe in her life, leaving mistakes, regrets, and the bottle behind her.

Stay if you like mess, avoid if you want message
Revisado: 05-02-24
Repetitive and utterly lacking in reflection, personal responsibility, gratitude or remorse. While there can (and should) be wide allowance given for people to diagnose what leads them to addiction and what path they’d like to pursue out of it — if that’s what they want — nothing about this version feels very consistent, useful or self-aware.

Historia
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Shockingly amateur
Revisado: 10-20-23
HOW did someone who edits books for a living manage to submit something this implausible and cliché? What little dialogue there is is stilted, and characters’ actions and motives are in constant opposition with a) real-life behavior and b) everything we have been led to believe about them. There’s ZERO indication that Jackson bothered to research or develop this story beyond the most shallow observations about the people and places in it and the result is characters who are cartoonishly self-sabotaging and daytime soap-level irrational. There were many times I wanted to give up.

Leon Neyfakh always manages to contextualize historical events in a way that is balanced and relevant. This is the standard to which all audio journalism should be held — provocative, insightful and required listening.

Unbelievably bad journalism
Revisado: 06-11-23
Instead of doing the actual work of understanding the major issues in this story — the darkness of addiction, the susceptibility of those harmed by trauma to not just chemical dependency but to exploitation by other addicts and/or those who prey on them and a host of other issues — Strudwick presents all of his conjecture as fact or relies exclusively the painful recollections of the victims’ friends where he should have consulted experts. There is a good story here, but this telling falls to oversimplification, sensationalism and the reporter’s clear investment in affirming his thesis over building (or at least supporting) it with evidence.

Extremely regressive
Revisado: 09-16-22
But somehow thinks it’s feminist? This plot is based on the idea that men who seem like jerks aren’t really jerks, men save women and women who just need the right man to change their mind and adjust their attitude. No bueno.
