The story and narration provided an interesting adventure. However, the audio fades and gets louder throughout this book. It’s as if the narrator keeps running ahead of you and you catch up only to fall behind again and struggle to catch what he is saying.

Funny and nostalgic

Sedaris’ writing just keeps getting better. His observations are clinically accurate and often mildly disturbing. The love for his family, concerns about aging and unfailing humor shine through in this book. I hope that he lives a long and life, and continues to share stories like these for a long time to come.

A pleasant story

This is a pleasant, slightly slow moving book. The characters’ dramas are those of a different time, and the conflicts seem quaint by today's standards. There are a few scenes that stretch the imagination, but one expects a bit of Blarney in a novel about life in Ireland. It’s worth the listen if you’re in the mood for something cozy.

These books are a guilty pleasure. Very silly, but very entertaining. My only suggestion would be that the author talk to a few women in real life, to make those characters more multi-dimensional. It would have been really helpful for this book, which featured a lot of female characters who should have been the primary focus of a major plot line.

That’s a minor quibble.

The narrator did a great job of differentiating accents and tone for the various characters. It helped keep everyone straight without being distracting.

Excellent Debut

It's so exciting to see a debut by an author whose work can't be neatly categorized. I'm so glad that I spied the editor's pick on Audible. I ordered this title based on the glowing review, and I'm so glad I did.

This is a book that people should be talking about. It's so exciting to be among the people who have discovered this novel, and this author early.

I liked it for its observationist humor, the flawed and multifaceted characters and the winks at pop culture. I loved it for its messages about how important relationships are, even as we increasingly isolate ourselves behind doors and keyboards.

The book does discuss adult themes, and won't be everyone's cup of tea. For those looking for something new, this book and this author are an adventure worth taking.

Not sure how to use this in real life

The stories were interesting, but other than using the steps to reach out to an uncommunicative teen, I'm not sure how to generalize a lot of the information for everyday conversations.

Not a romance novel

This book takes on tough moral issues and family dynamics without being condescending or preachy.

I read this based on a friend's recommendation. I would have given it a pass based on the cover.

The characters, places and events are richly detailed. My only complaint is that so many of the female characters defined themselves in relation to others in their lives.

The narrator's voices all sounded alike to me, but I was able to follow the dialogue. Her voice was pleasant enough, but with this many characters, some differentiation would be appreciated.

Better when it's not required reading

The short stories are portraits that capture ordinary events during a time long past. As a younger reader I did not appreciate the stories as much as I do now that I have more life experiences.

This is not an exciting book nor a "feel good" book. It is probably best read when you are seeking a connection to others who experience everyday frustrations, of you want a glimpse into average days a century ago.

The narrator is very good, but the musical interludes did not add to my enjoyment of this book.

Not in my wheelhouse

This is a look into the life of someone quirky and creative who starts her own business and pays a steep price for internet fame. If on-line gaming, science fiction and web videos aren't in your wheelhouse, then I suggest skipping this book. This isn't badly written, but I never felt a connection with the author.

Ms. Day's narration of her own book was very good.
