Wonderful history of the most lively Mr Jones

Truly a marvelously well written history of a lively and essentially good man set against the moral ambiguities of mid 18th century England. The narration is excellent with unique voices for each character, always a pleasure. Certainly a long book with sometimes tedious introductions but true to its time w insights on the human character that are true today.

I especially enjoyed the discussion of the scientist and the scientific process as well as all the explanations about how cells function and evolved into complicated organisms and ourselves. Beautifully fascinating and accessible.

I greatly enjoyed this novel that brings to life an interesting era I would never have known about otherwise. The characters, language, and cultural norms are so well presented they seem authentic. Some key turning points however are not fully explained. Also the ending, while satisfying to learn of the full life of the key character, does seem a bit rushed. Certain things were very well written and sometimes heart stopping. The Japanese culture is very interesting but I wonder how authentic it is and will look for reviews from that culture.

The audio version was very good however I was puzzled that when the Japanese are seeking to Europeans the voices are done with a Japanese accent. However when Japanese are speaking amongst themselves there is no Japanese accent.

Ambrose brings Lewis and his times to life in this excellent biography focused on the Lewis & Clark expedition. Agree with others that the detailed preparation leading to the trip was too long and that the return journey was rather abrupt. Apart from the details on the physical challenges of the expedition, I appreciated Ambrose’s comments on key decisions by the captains and their interactions with the indigenous peoples, which provided more context.

The narrator however has a tinny annoying and robotic delivery that made it challenging to continue. I persevered by listening at a faster speed.

I stuck with this book despite the narration and formulaic characters because of the historical background. I agree with others that the narration is poor, with a dreamy voice that is far too slow. The storyline itself contains two dimensional characters. The rich wealthy family caught up in their trips to Paris and lifestyle with no clue how the 90% toil and want a better life under the dictator. Of course they escape to the US not for democracy but economic freedom. Nothing wrong with that, but they seem to express little concern for the pre-Castro plutocracy. Two generations later, the Cuban Americans are no less informed.

I read this book because I really enjoyed the HBO series. The book met my expectations in providing more details about the men’s background, their training before D-Day, and particularly their military exploits thru Bastogne. The book slows down quite bit after that thru the war’s end as it becomes a chronicle of heavy drinking, very unfortunate accidents and death by misadventure, and the point system to get home. Their team work with long periods of training leading to their entry into the war while unsurpassed makes me interested in reading about Patton’s Third Army to compare these special divisions to the infantry.

Books lacks focus and covers so many historical characters on so many fronts from a small family who loses their parent, to mountaineers in the Himalayas, the division of post-war India, Bengal society, Ghandi. I could go on, but in between it devolves into the melodramatic failed marriages of the men and their women while some men were experimenting with their attraction to each other in Weimar Germany, What is going on? The tedium go to me. So many characters - I don't care what happpened to any of them. One of the worst histories I have ever sped read.

Marlowe as a spy

Cleverly based novel on the numerous theories about Marlowe as a spy though various liberties are taken regarding a role in Mary Queen of Scots’ execution. This Marlowe while still brilliant, lacks the joie de vivre I expected. He also is immature, takes his lover for granted again and again, and certainly lacks the mental discipline of a successful spy to compartmentalize his secret work from his private life. A solid effort however, worth reading. The Audible version needs a better narrator who speaks more smoothly, not with the stop and start phrasing of this narrator. Dialogue is fine but non-dialogue is delivered in an annoying staccato style. I increased the playback to overcome this problem.
