Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Not what I expected...better
Revisado: 07-18-24
Increadibly raw and honest story of a huge yet hidden subculture within America. Both hopeful and scathing. A blend of humor, horror, drama, sadness, and joy. I usually hate memoirs and biographies, but this kept my active attention, and is a powerful message about humanity and America to anyone. I knew nothing about the author prior to reading this, but cannot help but feel a significant respect for his humility, courage, and honesty in writing this book, as well as respect for his resiliency and accrued wisdom. A powerful read.

Revisado: 04-04-24
If I could replace this review with one long roar of 'waaaaaaaagh' I would do so. I've re-read this several times at this point. I formerly thought orks were kinda funny but dumb, and now I love them. The author and narrator breathe green fungal bone-crushing life into some of the most murderous and hilarious character ever to grace 40k.

Not disappointing, but...
Revisado: 04-04-24
I liked it, but it dragged a bit. Too much time spent on side characters and abstract chaos-isness leading to the fight between Horus and Emperor.

Historia
In the darkness beyond the galaxy, there are monsters. Some swim closer to the light, drawn by the beacon that is the Astronomican, while others stalk the Void, predators in the dark. The Carcharodons have hunted for millennia, but now they are drawn into a new blackness...the Dark City of the drukhari itself. Commorragh. For a thousand years, Chaplain Tangata Manu has searched for a relic lost under his watch: an ancient thing, once charged into the keeping of the Forgotten One himself. But at the brink of seeing his hunt fulfilled and the relic returned, it is stolen from under him.

Mediocre and Contrived
Revisado: 06-15-21
It felt out of genre and unlike Space marines. The suggestions about the so called void seemed childish and shallowly gothic. A mediocre showing for a space marine novel.

Good vocab, but ditch the music!
Revisado: 03-27-17
What would have made VocabuLearn better?
Stop playing loud music that both distracts the listener and makes the vocab hard to hear.
Would you be willing to try another book from Penton Overseas, Inc.? Why or why not?
No, the issue with the music was a rip-off, and made this purchase a waste of time.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrators were fine.
What character would you cut from VocabuLearn?
N/A

Meet Island of Dr. Moreau updated
Revisado: 03-27-17
What did you like best about Island 731? What did you like least?
Liked: gritty scifi-horror
Disliked: While I found this book when searching for 'kaiju', I don't know why. There's not much that its like Godzilla or Gamera here, just genetic scifi horror.
Would you recommend Island 731 to your friends? Why or why not?
If they like horror, yes.
Have you listened to any of R. C. Bray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Was Island 731 worth the listening time?
Yes, but not overwhelmingly so. I could have listened to better.
Any additional comments?
No.

Historia
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

Revisado: 01-06-17
This is not a traditional vampire story...more like a high fantasy novel with a dark hero as the protagonist.

Good story in the classic fantasy model, yet refreshingly novel in its execution, characterization, and eloquence.
