Totally predictable. None of the characters were interesting or appealing. Reading it was like junk food for my brain, but off brand, stale junk food.

A couple of obvious things first:
1. The author and narrators are not actually Southern (those accents were awful, y’all) and I’d be surprised if the author has ever even visited Atlanta.
2. The story is silly and predictable.
3. The writing is terrible. I’ve read Middle School essays with better descriptions.

And I listened to the whole thing. It was terrible writing and a ridiculous story (and don’t get me, a big ole dyke, started on the lesbian “plot twist.”). But it was great listening for fighting traffic and having something mindless to listen to.

This was a fantastic listen. I was captivated and engaged throughout the book. Imogen Church is just fantastic and the book is clever. This is my third Ware book and my favorite by far. I always appreciate her stories, but this one was the best.

In fairness, I’m only about half way through this horrible book. I’ve wondered if I’d hate it less of the narrator didn’t read every line like she was on the brink of a nervous breakdown or crying.

If you love copious poorly written similes and metaphors littered throughout your murder mysteries, this is the book for you. Good lord. The way she describes piss and what it sounds like in a toilet bowl took up the better part of a chapter.

I’ve spent three fourths of my commute screaming “I don’t care!” at the heroine. I generally have a lot of empathy for people and characters. Not this one. She’s annoying and self centered and I can’t wait to be rid of her and this dreadful book.

Any additional comments?

I've enjoyed her books in the past, but this one was just horrible. We listened to it on a recent road trip--it was like a bad Harlequin romance (an oxymoron, I know) from the start. We knew every stupid move the narrator was going to make before she did it. The abrupt ending was hours too late. There wasn't a thing I enjoyed about this book. If my spouse hadn't insisted that we listen to the entire thing, I would've quit after the first few chapters.

What did you love best about To Kill a Mockingbird?

I hadn't read To Kill a Mockingbird since I was in middle or high school. Reading it, many years later, as an adult, I heard the story in a whole new way. My Southern blood recognized the land, the people and the story.

Have you listened to any of Sissy Spacek’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I can not imagine a better narrator for this book than Spacek. She is phenomenal. The perfect voice for all the characters, but especially Scout.

Any additional comments?

I've been a member of Audible for over a decade and have read and heard many wonderful books. This is, hands down, the best book I've purchased. I will listen to it again and again.

Any additional comments?

I didn't expect to love a Stephen King book, but boy did I. Excellent narration, engrossing story. I am struggling to find another book after this one!

Who cast the female narrator?

What would have made Just One Look better?

A different female narrator. Did anyone actually listen to her before casting her?

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't have one. The narration was too distracting to pay attention.

How could the performance have been better?

A different female narrator.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyance, with the female narrator.

Any additional comments?

It's a fun and great story--engaging. But as almost every other reviewer has pointed out, the narration is horrendous. She does some strange thing with vowels, for example, "Jack" become "Jaaack," and not in a good Southern way. Strange lilting up at the end of every sentence. I mean, just awful. I really like Coben, so the story was worth listening to even with this narrator, but it was painful.

What would have made The Hour I First Believed better?

If it had been shorter--this book could've been done in 1/3 the time.

Would you ever listen to anything by Wally Lamb again?

Unlikely

Would you be willing to try another one of George Guidall’s performances?

No. Ick.

Any additional comments?

At one point, the author has the narrator read about 20 minutes worth of the writings of Klebold and Harris. It began to feel abusive and did nothing to assist the plot.

This story has moments of being engaging and entertaining, but it's too long and with a whiney narrator, it just makes for a dreadful day of your life, if you can slog through the entire 25 hours.

Not classic literature, but a very engaging story, well narrated. I hated it when the story ended!
