Historia
Thurston Moore moved to Manhattan’s East Village in 1978 with a yearning for music. He wanted to be immersed in downtown New York’s sights and sounds—the feral energy of its nightclubs, the angular roar of its bands, the magnetic personalities within its orbit. But more than anything, he wanted to make music—to create indelible sounds that would move, provoke, and inspire. His dream came to life in 1981 with the formation of Sonic Youth, a band Moore cofounded with Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo.

important 70’s/80's NYC scene history

Moore's autobiography functions more as history of the music and art scenes he was in than a typical autobiography. This makes for a fascinating listen for rock and roll dipshits like myself.

Historia
Bob Mould stormed into America's punk rock scene in 1979, when clubs across the country were filling with kids dressed in black leather and torn denim, packing in to see bands like the Ramones, Black Flag, and the Dead Kennedys. Hardcore punk was a riot of jackhammer rhythms, blistering tempos, and bottomless aggression. And at its center, a new band out of Minnesota called Hüsker Dü was bashing out songs and touring the country on no money, driven by the inspiration of guitarist and vocalist Bob Mould. Their music roused a generation.

I enjoyed the book. Mould doesn't come across as a great guy, but he does sound like an honest one. I hope he finds the contentment that seems elusive to him.

Written with the participation of the group's key members, including reclusive singer-songwriter Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson, and the family of late guitarist Bob Stinson, Trouble Boys is a deeply intimate and nuanced portrait, exposing the primal factors and forces - addiction, abuse, fear - that would shape one of the most brilliant and notoriously self-destructive bands of all time.

I enjoyed this. I bailed on the Mats after they gave Bob the heave ho. I feel the same as I did after reading Miles Davis' autobiography. These guys (westerburg especially) were jerks, but the music made up for it.

Historia
Few bands have inspired as much devotion as the Chicago rock band Wilco, and it's thanks, in large part, to the band's singer, songwriter, and guiding light: Jeff Tweedy. But while his songs and music have been endlessly discussed and analyzed, Jeff has rarely talked so directly about himself, his life, and his artistic process.

Revisado: 11-26-21
tweedy does a good job of telling about his life and career. The parts about Wilco, especially mote recent events could be mote detailed, but Tweedy is such a good storyteller that I didn't mind.

Historia
Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.

Historia
Universally acclaimed as a musical genius, Miles Davis was one of the most important and influential musicians in the world. Here, Miles speaks out about his extraordinary life. Miles: The Autobiography, like Miles himself, holds nothing back. For the first time Miles talks about his five-year silence. He speaks frankly and openly about his drug problem and how he overcame it. He condemns the racism he encountered in the music business and in American society generally. And he discusses the women in his life.

Revisado: 09-06-21
This is a great autobiography. Miles sounds like an egomaniacal genius who was using cocaine for 3 + decades. because that is the reality. The details on sessions, other musicians, and the music through the years are invaluable. Miles doesn't hold back.

Historia
In this pathbreaking book, Jonathan Rauch reaches back to the parallel 18th-century developments of liberal democracy and science to explain what he calls the “Constitution of Knowledge” - our social system for turning disagreement into truth. By explicating the Constitution of Knowledge and probing the war on reality, Rauch arms defenders of truth with a clearer understanding of what they must protect, why they must do - and how they can do it.

Timely and well written
Revisado: 07-19-21
Rauch does a great job of describing what he calls "the reality based community" and how the woke left and Trumpist right fail to live up to the standards of that community. There is a good deal of background on liberty and. the philosophy of this community as well. While not as groundbreaking as Kindly Inquisitors, this is still an excellent book
