Historia
In this remarkably honest memoir, award-winning journalist and distinguished author Kati Marton presents an impassioned and romantic story of love, loss, and life after loss. Paris is at the heart of this deeply moving account. At every stage of her life, Paris offers Marton beauty and excitement, and now, after the sudden death of her husband, Richard Holbrooke, it offers a chance for a fresh beginning.

Pretentious but worthwhile
Revisado: 06-01-21
A heartfelt and never boring memoir. The author is a woman of high intellect who tries unnecessarily hard to convince us of this throughout. I found it an interesting, humorless tale of trying to have it all, times ten. Did she ever laugh, I wonder. The French pronunciations are annoying, the name dropping is over the top amusing, but it’s definitely worth a listen, whether you like Paris or not.

Historia
Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m., just as he did when his wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same gray slacks and mustard sweater-vest; waters his fern, Frederica; and heads out to his garden. But on the one-year anniversary of Miriam's death, something changes. Sorting through Miriam's possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he's never seen before.

A charming and enjoyable story, with a spectacular performance. I wish it had gone into greater detail in a few spots, but overall, I enjoyed it... wanted it to go on a while longer.

Liked the story
Revisado: 08-09-20
A good story that needed better editing. Some things required more detail and explanation, and made me think “wait... what?” But overall it was a very nice story, and I enjoyed it. The writing is a bit amateurish in places, but quite good in others. The narrator was good when speaking the female voices, but the main male character voice was very robotic and almost made me quit listening... the other voices were well done.

Historia
A place you will never forget. Rosamunde Pilcher's Scotland...where the fields flourish with greenery, the bills bloom with purple, and the lochs glitter with the bright blue of the sky. A time you will never forget. September...when the heather is in full flower, the first chill of autumn cools the air, and the countryside stirs with the hunt, balls, dinner parties, and dance. Rosamunde Pilcher's September...a story of homecomings and heartbreaks, friendships, betrayals, forgiveness, and love.

Perfection
Revisado: 08-02-20
Pilcher’s books, exquisitely read in the Scottish and British accents of both old and young characters, have ruined me. I can’t find any audible books that I love more than these. Nothing else compares. “September” was beyond wonderful, just like “Coming Home” was. I only wish that there were hundreds more just like them.

Very well done historical fiction
Revisado: 06-15-20
Wasn’t sure I’d like this book, but started it on a long dog walk because I had nothing else to listen to. By the end of the walk, I couldn’t wait to listen again. The story was rich in detail, riveting, and I learned a lot about the war in the Pacific. The story was relatable and told from a human, emotional level. If you don’t want reality, don’t listen. There was real, raw animosity towards the Japanese during the war, and this book doesn’t whitewash it. It’s the way it was. I was so happy to hear the narrator’s familiar voice. I had previously listened to a book she had read, and didn’t like her narration at all to begin with, but she really grew on me. By the end of that other book, I loved her narration. If you don’t like her at first, give her a chance.

Since I’ve lived my life in the Rocky Mountain West, I couldn’t relate to much in the story, but I really liked it. Great narration by Linda Lavin, although she seemed like she was from Brooklyn instead of Boston.

Superb narration, even better story
Revisado: 05-18-20
The best narration I’ve heard yet. Elton wisely chose the star of Rocket Man to perform this book instead of doing it himself... so fabulously well done. A riveting and detailed account of Elton’s life, Taron Egerton brings it all to life in a massively entertaining way. Lots of detail about his early years, which is what I was after.

... but I liked it
Revisado: 12-05-19
A little corny, but well-done corny. Sometimes I need corny. I didn’t know much about the club mobile program and I learned a lot about it here. I liked the characters, the story, and found it entertaining. The narration was good, but a little off on British accents and male voices, which all sounded the same... didn’t bother me that much. I listened to it over the course of walking the dog daily through deep snowdrifts for several days after a huge storm. It served me well.

Loved this story, and the narration. I adored the luscious descriptions of homes, etc., a wonderful atmosphere is set. Excellent characters, coming apart and together throughout their lifetimes. Religion is a theme, but all sides are presented. I highly recommend this book.
