Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

A manual on how to connect with cancer patients
Revisado: 02-27-25
This book pave the way for my journey with my love ones who are suffering from cancer and with those who didn’t survive it. Author allows you to be a witness of the challenging reality of an illness society came to accept almost as “normal” . I learned how to communicate better with a nice going through cancer treatments. Even with a mom and sister that died from cancer. Great humanizing book.

Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Historia
Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

101 course in Mexican racism.
Revisado: 02-10-23
This book fills a chasm that currently exists in our schools, universities, libraries in terms of the integrated racism. Tenoch paints a clear portrait of the current Mexican hidden racism. Being a dark skinned mesoamerican immigrant in the US I had felt this discrimination from both worlds. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand or become a resentido.

A real novel
Revisado: 09-01-21
What a story. I felt like my dad was reading a tale. Beautiful use of the Spanish language. The narrator is a total master of the voice. If you can endure the prologue, you’ll enjoy the best narrator I’ve ever found in a while. In regards the prologue is a total disappointment. It’s like this queasy writer of novels can have an opinion of a master. Besides that, the book is captivating and a pleasure to hear.

Read it only if you can handle the truth.
Revisado: 08-25-21
Few books have such a strong message of search for historical truth written with eloquence a beautiful use of language. The whole book seems at times as a prayer for clarity and understanding of the real stories of the effects of slavery in the U S. As an immigrant, learning more accurate facts about this heinous part of the USA history makes me more aware of the dangers of not questioning what I have been told about it. Great reading

Historia
Decolonizing Wealth is a provocative analysis of the dysfunctional colonial dynamics at play in philanthropy and finance. Award-winning philanthropy executive Edgar Villanueva draws from the traditions from the Native way to prescribe the medicine for restoring balance and healing our divides. Though it seems counterintuitive, the philanthropic industry has evolved to mirror colonial structures and reproduces hierarchy, ultimately doing more harm than good. After 14 years in philanthropy, Edgar Villanueva has seen past the field’s glamorous, altruistic façade, and into its shadows....

Unlearn who you are
Revisado: 04-28-21
This book should be a text book to teach in schools and universities around the world. Author writes from his heart and shares facts that unveil white supremacy for what it is: a virus. I wish most ppl could read how wealth has been an instrument to divide control and exploit ppl of color. I wish author have emphasized more facts about Latino community. Native Americans and blacks have suffered under this colonial system but not as much as ppl south of the border have. Starting with the colonization of our believes. Great book
