Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Boring conjecture and opinion little to no science
Revisado: 03-18-21
I was expecting a story about the multitudes of mutations, genome changes and subsequent phenotypes that lead to the evolution of Homo sapiens from our LUCA of chimps.. what I got was a story that takes place after all of that and is much less interesting and much more so just the authors opinion and social commentary.. talk about a mislead title..

Historia
Max Tegmark leads us on an astonishing journey through past, present and future, and through the physics, astronomy, and mathematics that are the foundation of his work, most particularly his hypothesis that our physical reality is a mathematical structure and his theory of the ultimate multiverse. In a dazzling combination of both popular and groundbreaking science, he not only helps us grasp his often mind-boggling theories, but he also shares with us some of the often surprising triumphs and disappointments that have shaped his life as a scientist.

Amazing !
Revisado: 06-23-19
I took 5 semesters of math in college and had no idea what any of it meant. I had no idea about mathematical relationships, mathematical structures or the associated properties of them and what this signified. This book is one of the most intelligent ideas on this planet and Tegmark should be honored for his ideas as the next richard feynman or the next carl sagan

Historia
In The Equations of Life, biologist Charles S. Cockell makes the forceful argument that the laws of physics narrowly constrain how life can evolve, making evolution's outcomes predictable. If we were to find something very much like a lady bug eating something very much like an aphid on a distant planet, we shouldn't be surprised. The forms of life are guided by a limited set of rules, and, as a result, there is a narrow set of solutions to the challenges of existence.

Boring textbook that doesnt explain anything
Revisado: 06-23-19
I was expecting something similar to "Scale" by geoffrey west (which the author basically plagiarizes during his examples of scaling laws and explanation) or perhaps something similar to jeremy english's ideas on the adaptation dissipation model, what I got was a painful textbook on entymology.
There is a major difference between a description and an explanation: this book is a boring series of equations that describes obscure details of life and their associated variables, it does not explain it nor does it tie these equations into any coherent theoretical framework. Also one of the most boring books ive ever read: getting through the first 3 chapters was a major drag

Historia
Epigenetics can potentially revolutionize our understanding of the structure and behavior of biological life on Earth. It explains why mapping an organism's genetic code is not enough to determine how it develops or acts and shows how nurture combines with nature to engineer biological diversity. Surveying the 20-year history of the field while also highlighting its latest findings and innovations, this volume provides a readily understandable introduction to the foundations of epigenetics.

Love this book, its great, still use it as a reference for genetic disorders and epigenetics refresher. The performance was easy to hear as well

Historia
Just 45 years ago, the age of gene modification was born. Researchers could create glow-in-the-dark mice, farmyard animals producing drugs in their milk, and vitamin-enhanced rice that could prevent half a million people going blind every year. But now GM is rapidly being supplanted by a new system called CRISPR or "gene editing". Using this approach, scientists can manipulate the genes of almost any organism with a degree of precision, ease and speed that we could only dream of ten years ago.

Audio hurts my ears SO bad
Revisado: 06-23-19
Love Nessa Carey, Her stuff is AMAZING. The audio for this book is SOOOOOO Bad!!! At times it sounds like I am listening to someone speak underwater where certain beginning and endings of words blurr and combine together to sound like white noise, almost sounds like its a poorly designed AI that read the book. its very annoying and ruined the book for me.

In recent years, the advent of MRI technology seems to have unlocked the secrets of the human mind, revealing the sources of our deepest desires, intentions, and fears. As renowned psychiatrist and scholar Sally Satel and psychologist Scott O. Lilienfeld demonstrate in Brainwashed, however, the explanatory power of brain scans in particular and neuroscience more generally has been vastly overestimated.

Love the book, it’s nice to have someone finally call out fMRI for the arbitrary poorly controlled experimental tool that it is, however about half way through the book I noticed this very high pitch ringing sound that persists through the entire book. Book is great Audio needs fixin

Historia
What happens when something is sucked into a black hole? Does it disappear? Three decades ago, a young physicist named Stephen Hawking claimed that it did - and in doing so, put at risk everything we know about the fundamental laws of the universe. Leonard Susskind and Gerard 't Hooft realized the threat and responded with a counterattack that changed the course of physics.

Not the best book for an “audiobook”
Revisado: 01-01-18
I like Leonard Susskind, but I never realized how important those diagrams are until I read the physical copy of this book. That being said: I love how he does not “dumb down” the material present in the book. however, there is a lot of him “hamming it up” and the book could have been compressed to about 8hrs
