A unique (and hopeful?) account of the apocalypse

I liked The Power... I think this one is better. The one qualm I had is one chapter that randomly and weirdly turned into a bizarre rant by a relatively new character explaining machine learning. It was basically just a guy we'd never seen before screaming a Wikipedia page at us. For a book that otherwise managed exposition very well, and included literal sermons, it felt preachy and ham-handed.

Thankfully that was just one stumble amid everything else. Loved the characters, their stories, the plot... There were a lot of moving parts to deal with (and I admit the machine learning diatribe was helpful) and managing to work in an actual story (and a lesbian romance!) amid all that is highly impressive. Definitely a favorite of the year.

I feel like the stories only stopped because they caught up to the present day. Maybe there will be a second volume set in future eras (although that would be odd considering how reality-grounded this was). I enjoyed all the segments, but Novak (1986) stood out as a highlight while Edward (1938) started to lose me a bit toward the end.

An excellent story about moviemaking from someone who knows what he's talking about. I was a little disappointed at how little the other narrators were used, but I did appreciate the effort of including them to give each person a voice.

I almost skipped this book because of a knee-jerk reaction to the phrase "WWII" in the description. There are about ten thousand novels about London/Europe during WWII, pretty much covering every single day of the war from every potential angle. It's exhausting. But this was something completely different. A whole new perspective on a war that's been exhaustively covered, from the point of view of characters you truly care about by the time the war rolls in.

The description for this book says it braids together the main story with the exhaustive (and exhausting) fictionalized biography of William Faulkner. A more accurate description would be to say it's two completely different novels smashed into each other. The first, main story is great. It's why I spent the credit. I couldn't have cared less about Faulkner. So I found it incredibly irritating for the book to hit the brakes on every other chapter to tell a completely unrelated story. I didn't care about Faulkner before, and I kind of hate him now. I didn't care an iota about his story, and every page/minute spent on him was a distraction from the story I showed up to read.

I didn't hate it. But it was two shorter books with the chapters sewn together, and both suffered from it.

I absolutely loved this book. It's technically a collection of stories, but honestly it's just a story about a city - Lagos, Nigeria - and the people (and creatures) who live there. It's almost impossible to write a book that captures an entire city but this one succeeds in every way. It's magical and beautifully written, the kind of book you want to reread immediately just to catch the things you know you missed. Without question, I know it will be one of my favorite books of 2022.

At times you have to wonder if Matt Bell was paid by the word. First you have FOUR FULL EBOOK PAGES of listing random animals, probably copy and pasted from Wikipedia, then you have "gravel of this, gravel of that, gravel of gravel, gravel of who, gravel of what, gravel of..." I've never before jabbed the 'skip forward' button in such frustration.

My first Matt Bell book, and most likely my last.

I received an advanced copy of the ebook version, and I enjoyed it enough to still want to buy an official copy. When I discovered the TNG cast would all be playing themselves, it became a must-buy. Brent does an excellent job as the main narrator, and the dialogue provided by his castmates is seamlessly threaded in. A fantastic read and a great listen.

The narrator isn't bad. He does well with actual narration, and the Book sections. But literally every other character voice is awful, some borderline unbearable. When Benny gets emotional, it's awful. and every freaking word out of Annabelle's mouth. She's in the running for worst audiobook character voice I've ever heard (and when she sings? oh GOD there are moments when she sings, and I wanted to tear the headphones out of my ears). Definitely maybe consider just reading this one.
