Not the JR Ward I'm used to

I know this is the first novel of a "new" series (spin off from BDB), but this just did not work for me. Compared to Dark Lover the first novel of BDB... Dark Lover is just on a higher caliber. The random insert of Xhex makes little sense overall, other than giving the reader a tenuous tie-in to the BDB world. I feel like this was a bait-and-switch. This was marketed as the first Wolven novel. Only one character is Wolven, and it's never even mentioned until the last 10 minutes. The spice level is rather non-existent for this author. Sadly, I have no hope for the rest of this series. As always, I have no complaints with Jim Frangione's narration. He did the best with what he was given :-/

Decent story, stiff narration

Narrator has absolutely no tone variance or inflection - must have thought he was reading the encyclopedia. No distinction between male/female characters and dialogue runs together so you can't tell who is saying what to whom. Should have read it instead of listened - story was decent. Sadly cannot return - waste of credit.
