A Theological Curiosity
Revisado: 08-13-22
This book will not be useful for every Christian. The Bible clearly does speak of spiritual beings other than God. That such beings may be more numerous and more heterogeneous than is commonly supposed, may be a useful thought to have. But I am not sure that we really need to understand such beings in great detail and I am not certain that such a detailed understanding is possible. Finally I think it could be unhealthy to spend too much time contemplating such beings.

Historia
Intended to be a defense of the Christian religion, Pensées is a penetrating collection of thoughts on faith, reason, and theology. Unfinished at the time of Pascal's death, the book consists of philosophical fragments on the "wretchedness" of man and the controversial schisms of the church at the time. It includes the philosopher's infamous wager encouraging belief over agnosticism, as well as his thoughts on numerous other topics. Endlessly quotable, Pensées overflows with pearls of wisdom, each elusive sentence pregnant with a universe of thought.

Important Reading for Christians
Revisado: 02-14-22
This book has affected my thinking more than anything I have read in a long time. It is very well worth the time it takes to read it once and there are some parts which merit repeated reading and deep meditation.
It is not just intelligent and interesting. It is spiritually formative. It will help to solidify the faith of the faithful.
The quality of the narration of this audio book is good enough . . .

Maybe Useful to Some For Group Discussion
Revisado: 11-11-21
Caring for one another is important. To the extent that this book helps to further that objective, I am all for it. I think that most Christians will agree with most of what is written. However I did not find this book to be full of fresh perspectives. And I could not imagine using it as the centerpiece for discussion in any of the groups of which I now am or recently have been a part.

Historia
In the post-Christian context, public life has become markedly more secular and private life infinitely more diverse. Yet many Christians still rely on cookie-cutter approaches to evangelism and apologetics. Most of these methods assume that people are open to, interested in, and needy for spiritual insight when increasingly most people are not. The urgent need, then, is the capacity to persuade - to make a convincing case for the Gospel to people who are not interested in it.

Worth Reading But
Revisado: 11-11-21
I have always felt that it is worth reading any book that teaches you even one really important thing that you never understood before. This book taught me several important things that were new to me. So by that measure it was worth reading. Having said that, I felt that this book would have benefited from better organization or perhaps from being broken into two or three separate books each of which had a tighter focus.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.
