Do you dread work functions? Are you anxious at parties? Avoid networking events? One of the biggest epiphanies I had in life was that social skills are just that...skills. You are no more naturally shy than you are naturally unable to drive a car. You just don't have the practice or guide to teach you. That's where The Alpha Male's Guide to Mastering the Art of Small Talk comes in! Want to be more magnetic, attractive, and able to win friends and influence people? Then look no further!

waste of time
Revisado: 06-18-19
Out of the brief 76 minutes, most of the words are wasted on the initial hook for the reader's interest. After that there is no substance. I will never again waste an audible credit on one of these self-help "books" that were clearly just churned out to get clicks and impulse buys on the platform. Anyone can record a voice and call it a "book" these days.

Learning the strategies of small talk in this book will dramatically change your social life for the better.

OK, but needs more detail.

This very short book may point out some obvious things to the very socially inhibited or oblivious, but it needs more detail to be useful to a broad audience. I'm glad that it was cheap.

a waste of time
Revisado: 10-10-17
Andy Arnott wasted my money and time. Before I listened, I was rightly skeptical about how much information could be conveyed in a mere 46 minutes. However, since it was cheap (another red flag,) I listened to this recording on the off chance that Arnott would be REALLY efficient in getting his points across. After all, most works of non-fiction waste a lot of text on personal narratives and allegorical stories that are meant to hook and entertain a reader who really just wants the points laid out. As it turns out, "Effortless Small Talk" is ALL HOOK, as Arnott wastes more than half of the scant 46 minutes trying to sell the reader on why small talk is important and why this book will help them.
I've noticed that Audible has lot of very short self-help and instructional "books" that promise listeners solutions to common problems. After purchase, the listener learns that the text is merely continuation of the subtitle; sales language pitched to convince the reader that this "book" will solve their problems. It is as if Audible has given rise to its own genre of fluff content created by hucksters who seized an opportunity to manipulate yet another medium. In the future, I'll be more careful to only purchase books that have been published and reviewed in physical bound copies.

Historia
At a time when men and women were prepared to kill - and be killed - for their faith, the Protestant Reformation tore the Western world apart. Acclaimed as the definitive account of these epochal events, Diarmaid MacCulloch's award-winning history brilliantly recreates the religious battles of priests, monarchs, scholars, and politicians - from the zealous Martin Luther and his 95 Theses to the polemical John Calvin to the radical Igantius Loyola, from the tortured Thomas Cranmer to the ambitious Philip II.

Poor Narration.
Revisado: 06-24-17
Would you listen to The Reformation again? Why?
I would not listen this audiobook again unless business required it. Its too much work to follow the narrator.
What other book might you compare The Reformation to and why?
Other books address the topic with less depth, but are much easier to listen to.
What didn’t you like about Anne Flosnik’s performance?
Anne Flosnik put me to sleep.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I paid to much for this book just to find out that it was so difficult to listen to.
Any additional comments?
This book could at least be used as a non-pharmaceutical sedative.

Mid-brow, entertaining history

Any additional comments?
This book was detailed enough to teach me something that I didn't already know, but light enough for my 21st century attention span. The listener needn't worry about the author covering the reformation with a sectarian bias. The only weakness I can gripe about is that the author organizes the book to discuss different Reformation-related trends that spanned Europe. Of course, the Reformation developed differently in different countries. Those differences were addressed in detail, but, since chapters are not organized geographically, I found it difficult to keep track of which country's Reformation he was talking about. The author jumps from locality to locality in the same paragraph. Admittedly, I probably would have heard the reference to a different example in a different country if my attention were fully focused on the reading. But, hey, this is an audio-book, which means that I'm always doing something else while the narrator has a maximum of 1/2 my attention.

disappointing
Revisado: 04-15-17
What was most disappointing about Chris Hemswith’s story?
This book is prosaic, safe, unoffensive, and not very helpful. The few bits of common sense in this book should already be common sense for the listener. The rest of the very common sense in this book is not going to help him.

Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath. Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong....

Historia
"Strength training" and "seniors" does not sound like a probable match, but in fact it is a match made in heaven. The mere thought of people who are past their physical prime pumping iron might seem vain or ludicrous, but millions of seniors are discovering the manifold benefits of strength training, and the medical community continues to produce studies showing that those who dare to incorporate strength training in their weekly routines gain all sorts of physical and emotional benefits.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
someone who believes that seniors can't lift
Has Strength Training for Seniors turned you off from other books in this genre?
no
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
yes
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Feelings? Hmmm. I may need to spend some time on a velvet couch before I can articulate those.
Any additional comments?
This book may turn a light-bulb on for the person who has never touched a weight or the person who has always assumed that weights are only for steroids-swollen bodybuilders. As a person who has had his hands on weights for a long time, I sought some specific details on physiology and nutrition for the aging lifter. This book was way too elementary to provide much of that. Much of the brief time was wasted just making the case for seniors lifting at all. It then described some basic dumbbell lifts and calisthenics for major muscle groups which all lifters are familiar with. There were some tips on form and pace (like going slow on the negative) which novice lifters need to know, but those tips apply to a 16yo, just as they apply to a senior. I did not continue listening to the very end because it was clear that this book was too elementary.

Do you struggle to get your point across to people? Do you ever feel like you are somehow weak and ineffectual in the way you communicate? Perhaps others just don't take you seriously. There is no easy fix for all of your problems. However, whatever those problems are, if social interaction is involved then a firm grip on the tenets of nonverbal communication can make it better. Your mother wasn't just blowing hot air when she told you to stand up straight. Mom knows the way we carry ourselves says a great deal about our character, our self-respect, and who we are.

I hesitated to buy this due its sensational title and the fact that it uses a pretty girl to sell the cover. Its short length (3+ hours) to address a complex topic was another red flag. All my expectations were met.
