Adrift in the divide between galaxies and surrounded by the vast emptiness of the intergalactic void, the Tantalus Cluster is the only home humanity has ever known. Desperate and facing starvation, humanity’s only hope is a strange nebula that has suddenly appeared beyond the edge of the cluster. Its shifting clouds may hide a source of salvation for the people of Tantalus, but time is running out.

Would be better as a TV series
Revisado: 01-18-25
This simply doesn't work as an audio-only performance. The voices of the characters are too similar and it is difficult to tell who is who (except for the one male character). They need to hire an animation studio, animate it, and stick it on youtube or have some direct download site. It would work a lot better as a TV show or animated series.
Also the story while promising has some definite problems. Too many girl-bosses sobbing about the consequences of their terrible decisions. It's like the writers are trying to say women are horrible leaders and shouldn't be in any kind of military structure.
Too many of the events seemed contrived to create drama while relegating the main plot to almost irrelevance. The bombing chapter specifically is a perfect example of this. That was entirely unnecessary. And we didn't even care about some of the characters because they were nothing more than glorified red shirts.
This was only the first three chapters, so maybe the characters all grow and develop into great people and leaders and the story telling gets better. However there's a lot of other content out there that I'm going to try first, before I check out the next three chapters.

Historia
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

Bad narration of bad love letters throughout time.
Revisado: 05-28-23
It is a good concept. Two opposing time agents fall in love and secretly share love letters between them throughout time. Unfortunately, the letters do little to explain anything. There's almost no glimpse of the larger world. There's almost no understanding of why they fell in love, stayed in love, and will forever be in love. Actually after some reflection I wonder if it isn't love they're feeling but just strong admiration and respect of a challenging rival, they're actually feeling).
Also the narrators don't help this production. Their voices and speech patterns are way too similar. More than half the time I'd be thinking the letter was from one of them only to realize half way through the chapter that it was from the other one.
I know others have given this rave reviews, but I wish I had returned this after 10min and found something else to listen to

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

Mediocre narrator and mediocre story
Revisado: 06-24-18
I admit I only started this series because of the show. This is the 3rd and final book of the series. The 1st audiobook in the series I highly recommend. The 2nd one was also fairly good. Unfortunately they changed narrators for the 3rd book. While the new guy is ok, he's not great. The weird echo chamber used for flashbacks really didn't help my opinion of the narrator and was quite jarring. Also like so many other series nowadays, the more the author writes, the worse the story becomes. It was still entertaining, but after the previous two I expected a lot better.

Gunnery Sergeant Swanson finds himself an unwitting pawn in a plot to take over the US. Fortunately he does his part to thwart the coup.
Constant jumping of the point of view to point of view was a bit disconcerting. However overall worked well for this story.
The narrator did a superb job. He really brought the story to life.

Seems like a bait and switch
Revisado: 07-12-17
This picks up where Book 1 ended but is from the point of view of the slave girl who was freed by the heros. If I didn't know subsequent books in the series gets back on track with the Loose Nuts team I would have considered this a bait and switch and never bother with another book from the author.
Also I think the author missed an opportunity to write a full novel. The first half should have been her capture and life as a slave and then the events of Book 1 from her point of view (which wouldn't have been much). Someone in Book 1 (I think Liam) wondered how she could have become so hard and this would have been a perfect opportunity to explain that.
As it is, it is an ok story albeit a bit predictable. The bad guys are overly bad. Celina is a saint for not killing them.
I do wonder how Celina lucked out to find Kathryne. If I was an escaped slave looking for my sister, I would never have that kind of luck. Without finding Kathryne nothing else would have fallen into place and she either would have never found her sister or would have ended up back as a slave or more likely both her and her sister killed.
And also maybe I fell asleep or something, but what happened to the drunk guy who gave Celina his number? Either the author never heard of Chekhov's gun or doesn't believe in that concept. Of course this is the same author who in Book 1 gave us two hours of excruciating detail of cleaning the spaceship's sewer system.
Finally the narrator did an excellent job bringing this story to life. In fact I think if I had read the book instead of listening to it, I wouldn't have finished it. She didn't have a lot to work with but she did wonders with it.

Always leave 'em wanting more
Revisado: 04-03-17
You would think after 9 books that everyone would be ready for the series to end. However I have to say I think the author missed a good opportunity for at least 1 possibly 2 more books in the series.
For example, the whole subplot with the two Shannons, I would have loved for that to have been expanded out to be another book. However it played out fairly quickly, much like everything in this book.
A lot of the book also felt forced and rushed. When they took Keeper why didn't they replace him so that someone could defend the Keyhole? Why would the Supreme King debase itself by interacting with Hale and the others? Why were they just so incompetent in this book?
Also the very quick resolution of Malal really felt forced. Why didn't he realize who the Qa’Resh were? Why is it ok for Qa’Resh to ascend but not Malal? For that matter why imply that it would be ok for the Ibarras to ascend if they ever find the gate again? Frankly, Malal, the Qa'Resh, the Toth, and the Ibarras should have been expanded out to another book too. Another book for these events might also provide a good opportunity to explore the transition from a militaristic society to a civil society (or maybe when Valdar says such a transition will be hard that is the author saying it would be too hard to write about) .
While almost all of the loose ends are tied up, it really felt like either the publisher ( or the author) had decided this would be the last book in the series and rushed everything and made endings for almost everyone just a little too perfect. Don't get me wrong, I'm rather happy with the ending, I just think it should have taken another book or two to get there.
One final note, Luke Daniels' performance is spot on as usual. By far my favorite narrator. As usual he made this a joy to listen to.

In the third book of the Extinction Wars series, the Emperor of the Lokhars declares a holy crusade against the last humans, promising to finish what he started. Yep it is almost like Vikings in space.
Revisado: 08-08-15
What made the experience of listening to Star Viking the most enjoyable?
The narrator is perfect.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I don't know. It's a lot like the previous two in the series. Even the main character is very one dimensional.
Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel – was your favorite?
Creed
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes but it was just too long to do so.
Any additional comments?
Third in the Extinction Wars series. If it ain't broke don't fix it right? The formula that worked so well in the first book, is really starting to wear thin by this book. But hey we've got this dude that will take down the hordes of arrogant aliens, save the world, and stumble upon some answers to the ancient machines and the Creator. What's not to like?
Claath didn't show up at all in this, which was a bit disappointing. However the grand plot did move along. Some info is revealed about the ancient machines, but mainly more questions are left to ponder about them.
There are clearly more books in this series to come. While I enjoyed this book I'm just not sure I can take much more of Creed being the stubborn, "damn the space nukes, full speed ahead," lucky guy that he is. According to the book 8 years have past, yet everyone is the exact same character they were in the first book. I would expect some change. At least maybe a real introspective moment at some point. Having said that I'm looking forward to the next book if only to learn the secret of the machines.

More arrogant condensing aliens fall to Cmdr Creed
Revisado: 08-04-15
What made the experience of listening to Planet Strike the most enjoyable?
The narrator is really good and gets the voices spot on.
Would you be willing to try another book from Vaughn Heppner? Why or why not?
yes. This was entertaining.
Which scene was your favorite?
The end where Creed sets himself up as leader of the guards.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The final conversation with the Lohar Prince.
Any additional comments?
This illuminates some of the mysteries from the first book. While it is awesome to see Creed goad and manipulate a bunch of arrogant aliens, it does get kind of old. This is basically the first book with a few names changed. That said, who doesn't love daring space adventure, fighting against new and horrible aliens, and saving the universe? Still a fun book.

Just plain fun scifi action
Revisado: 08-01-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Assault Troopers to be better than the print version?
Yes. I wouldn't have actually read the book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main char, Creed
What does Christian Rummel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His voices really brought the characters alive.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reaction other than couldn't wait to hear more of the story.
Any additional comments?
This would be a perfect male fantasy if there had only been some sex. But hey it's got a typical guy running around shooting aliens, outsmarting the devil, and saving the world.
For me it's all the more fun because I know a couple of people with almost the exact same background and personality as the main character.
