Cast out and alone, Yip strikes out on a quest spanning the breadth of his home world of Ea’ae and into the greater macroverse beyond in an attempt to unseat an all-consuming Darkness rooted in his once vaunted order’s distant past. Absolutely the best
Revisado: 10-16-24
This is my favorite book series of all time. The only thing wrong is that audible doesn’t have the complete series. The AI does a decent job. I’ve heard much worse from humans and much worse from other AI voices.

Amazing. Was worried it would ruin the film and found that idea false. Details and feel are different from the movie and neither form hurts the other. Fantastic writing and performance.

Historia
Young Cally is an apprentice within the most unusual order of sorcerers in the known world: the only one that forbids its members from using their powers to kill. Despite his lowly status, Cally's chosen by the Master of the Order to join a delegation to see their allies the Lannovians. The meeting will be historic: 60 years ago, the Order's enemies attacked them with a host of demons, forcing the Order to trap the monsters inside their own citadel and seal it shut with impenetrable wards. The trick worked so well the Order hasn't been able to get it back open since.

audio is bad but not insufferable
Revisado: 01-18-23
Story is pretty good. Hard to have a reset on the Nether after Dante fighting the gods. The bad audio isn't as jarring as the reviews claim. Then again, I'm a musician with a high tolerance for bad audio.

As the son of a mere merchant, Klöss wants nothing more than to pass his trials and join the ranks of the Bjornmen raiders, breaking free of his father’s ambitions and following in the footsteps of his forebears. Times are changing in the Barren Isles. The centuries-old traditions of coastal plunder are making way for outright conquest, and the threat of war is looming.

Pretty good
Revisado: 12-07-22
Story is pretty good. Good characters aside from a few things. There is the girl who almost gets raped then goes on to blame herself for being a "tease". That was terrible to listen to. Never really resolved the point either. She just goes on blaming herself until she finds a new man to "tease" and seemingly forgets everything. The trilogy starts very strong. Interesting twist on magic and elves. Everything chugs along happily then the end resolves quickly, world is saved, and some of the characters resolve their development and some don't. Glad I listened to it but wish it had been better.

Historia
Orcs, an ancient fiend thought lost to history, have risen from The Under Realm. Their hunger for total dominance has plunged Illian into war, pushing the survivors to Namdhor, the last refuge of man at the top of the world. For those who stand up to this foe, they do so in darkness. Ash clouds smother the skies, blocking out the sun as the orcs rampage across the land.

Narrator is getting better
Revisado: 08-26-22
I'm still amazed by this series. Simply fantastic. The narrator is getting better as well. Now he does a slight accent for some characters. Still delivering some lines with an inflection contradicted by the text here and there. His voice is great as a narrator and carries the performance through the regular stumbles. It's probably my music background but still hard to hear mistakes being recorded, edited, and shipped as a final product. Audiobooks need to catch-up to the rest of the world as an art form. I'm being critical here. We can't all be Andy Serkis and Steven Brand does an acceptable job. We can't know the scenario he had to record this in but we do have his name to place blame on. I would lean towards blaming the producers more than the voice actor.

The final days of hope have come and gone. The kingdoms of Illian stand on the edge of ruin, threatened by the armies of Valanis. As evil spreads across the land, too few are left to hold the line. A world away, the children of fire and flame may be the only hope for the realm, but the dragons have been defeated before. Now Verda's future hangs in the balance.

Solid
Revisado: 08-18-22
Another excellent entry to the series. I'm loving the characters, story, and world. Narrator is the weakest link. He doesn't do character voices. I can accept that as an art style although many narrators on audible are exceptional at voices. My only complaint is that he will deliver a line completely counter to the emotion described in the text. A character can be quivering and crying and he'll deliver the line in a strong confident male voice. Deadpan is a style but he will then deliver the emotion at other times. Sorta comes off like he is reading lines without paying attention to what is being read. They list a producer and executive producer in the credits, who were obviously not too involved in the recording process. Musicians are taught to never leave a mistake in the recording. Narrators can seemingly do whatever they want.

Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Excellent series
Revisado: 07-01-22
This is one of my favorite series. Read it a few years ago and just finished the trilogy on audible. It has adult language and themes but no graphic sex. Mostly the f word and people being changed by the challenges life gives them(mostly killing). Tame compared with GoT. The world is amazing. Enough detail for different places to feel real and very old but not over the top. Set in an Asian inspired Empire and the characters come in all different colors. Strong female characters who are concerned with what they have to do and not just talking about men. Solid character development. Much more than the typical "I became the hero I was told to become". Different cultures with different religions that actually make sense and are based on solid philosophy. This is the best modern fantasy series I've come across. I've been telling myself for years that I should start writing. Then an author like this comes along and I feel no need to write. This guy nails it.

Amazing
Revisado: 07-01-22
Hard to write a review. It's fantasy with some adult language but nothing sexually graphic. The violence and what it does to people are a big theme. The central characters are based in an Asian type empire unlike most fantasy set in old Europe. Refreshing to not have an entirely or mostly white set of characters. The worst part about the whole series is that there isn't more of it.

Fantastic
Revisado: 06-02-22
I loved the story and the characters. Good writing and good world-building. Narration is excellent. They use a different vocal tone, sounds like standing too close to the mic, for inner thoughts. Once I realized what it was it was amazing. The character voices are very good and distinct. Inner thoughts and character voices are often overlooked or poorly done. Not here. No more wondering if a line was read correctly. Author nailed the story and the narrator nailed the performance.
