Historia
If you had to pick five people to sum up your life, who would they be? If you were to raise a glass to each of them, what would you say? And what would you learn about yourself, when all is said and done? This is the story of Maurice Hannigan, an Irish farmer. Over the course of a Saturday night in June, he orders five drinks at the Rainsford House Hotel, and with each he toasts a key person from his life: his adored older brother; his troubled sister-in-law; his daughter of 15 minutes; his son far off in America; and his late, much missed wife.

It is extraordinary what Francis Spufford understands about living, about life, about being human. I thoroughly enjoyed spending all these hours listening to Imogen Church. Thank you both for an experience I will carry with me for a long time.

Historia
While the Celtic Tiger rages, and greed becomes the norm, Johnsey Cunliffe desperately tries to hold on to the familiar, even as he loses those who all his life have protected him from a harsh world. Village bullies and scheming land-grabbers stand in his way, no matter where he turns. Set over the course of one year of Johnsey’s life, The Thing About December breathes with his grief, bewilderment, humour and agonising self-doubt.

It was such a great pleasure to listen to Donal Ryan read his novel. His beautiful accent brought alive the language of Johnsey's world. An extraordinary rendering of a difficult life. Johnsey is a character that will stay with me for some time.
There should be a starred review for the quality of the recording. There is a lot of skipping in chapter 7.

Historia
When John Dyer returns to Oxford from Brazil with his young son, he doesn't expect to find them both in danger. Every day is the same. He drops Leandro at his smart prep school and walks to the library to research his new book. His time living on the edge as a foreign correspondent in Rio is over. But the rainy streets of this English city turn out to be just as treacherous as those he used to walk in the favelas. Leandro’s schoolmates are the children of influential people, among them an international banker, a Russian oligarch, an American CIA operative and a British spook.

A fabulous read

There's so much to enjoy about this book; international relations, history, literature, beautiful writing, the plot of a thriller, a story of a man and a boy, the finding of love. And all so very English. The performance was wonderful. I was carried away by it all.

In 1965 as Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s striking vision for the Sydney Opera House transforms the skyline and unleashes a storm of controversy, the shadow of the Vietnam War and a deadly lottery threaten to tear the country apart. A terrific book and beautifully read. Very Australian. Very clever too, in using the building of the Sydney Opera House as the anchor for a story of love and loss, and art and war.
