Stout is always great, but the narrator...
Revisado: 05-01-25
I love Wolfe stories. I have read every one at least a dozen times in the last 50 years. I've listened to as many stories as I can. But this narrator would be great for a British book, but Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin should not have British accents. No, No, a thousand times No. I cringe at every word. Wolfe was born in Eastern Europe and Archie in Ohio, but they've lived in New York for decades. And Saul and the boys are New Yorkers not Londoners.

Historia
Throughout human history, certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period. A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola.

Read it, don't do audible.

I read this book several years ago. The book was a great 5 star read. I decided to listen to it instead of rereading it. couldn't get far. The narrator turns a great book into a snore. What a shame.

Historia
Sam Spade was a hard-boiled detective with cold detachment, a keen eye for detail, and unflinching determination to achieve his own justice. The character of Sam Spade was created by writer Dashiell Hammett in 1930 for his crime story The Maltese Falcon, and for most people, the character is closely associated with actor Humphrey Bogart, who played Sam Spade in the third and most famous film version of the story. In 1946, William Spier, one of radio's top producers, brought Sam Spade to the airwaves.

cant resist
Revisado: 11-14-19
How can anyone resist the great good fun of Howard Duff and the remarkable Lurene Tuttle, who plays all the female roles on the show. Always worth it.

Historia
No bigger fad swept across postwar radio than that of the hard-boiled private detective - and nobody had more fun with their wink-and-nudge take on the genre than the producers, writers, and cast of The Adventures of Sam Spade. Dashiell Hammett's legendary private eye had a sardonic sense of humor, which wavy-haired, rugged-voiced Howard Duff played to perfection.

Lurene Tuttle is perfection
Revisado: 11-14-19
when I found out Lurene Tuttle plays all the female roles on this show, I knew I had found the greatest actress on radio. Howard Duff and Tuttle are a perfect match. it is great fun. Fun fact: Lurene Tuttle played the sheriff's wife on Psycho.

Historia
When Howard Duff, radio’s regular Sam Spade, was dropped from the show, Steven Dunne donned the trench coat. Finding his own brash and boyish style with the role, Dunne’s Spade was much like creator Dashiell Hammett himself - a grown-up teenager who loved a put-on, but could be depended on to be loyal and true despite his own troubles. In these digitally remastered capers, Hammett’s hard-boiled hero delves in to the domains of daytime serials, journalism, the waterfront, and international intrigue.

pretty good
Revisado: 11-14-19
Steve Dunne doesn't quite have the same fun with the role, but if we hadn't heard Howard Duff first Steve would have been worth it.
