Just so perfect
Revisado: 01-12-25
Story, character development, humour and narration are so good that I’m in raptures. Could not find fault anywhere (not that I was looking). Have postponed in listening to a book in this series before I have the next in hand. It would be way too difficult to wait.

Historia
If you ask a Finn, they will likely be as baffled as you are. That’s why Melanie Dower, an expat who has been living in Finland for the past decade, has taken up the charge. Her vantage as an outsider entrenched in Finnish culture uniquely positions her to identify the keys to Finnish happiness that elude the rest of the world and that Finns take for granted. From sauna to strong social safety nets, Finnish life is made up of a constellation of habits and structures that leave its residents relaxed, healthy, and fulfilled.

Can vouch that this is an accurate description of reasons why us Finns are happier or as the author suggests more content than other cultures. Made me appreciate my country even more. Reader is superb as always, but I had to giggle at the pronunciation of Finnish words. Not the easiest of languages!

Amelia Peabody inherited two things from her father: a considerable fortune and an unbendable will. The first allowed her to indulge in her life's passion. Without the second, the mummy's curse would have made corpses of them all.

Great start for series
Revisado: 10-19-24
Although this also works well as a standalone book. Loved the various characters, settings and history. Did not detect errors in history, though that may be due to my own ignorance, rather than the excellence of the writer. For me absence of logical or historical errors is key to enjoyment of a book. The narrator is spot on and I loved every minute. This delivered a witty, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Historia
Alan, the beadle of the manor of Bampton, had gone out at dusk to seek those who might violate curfew. When, the following morning, he had not returned home, his young wife Matilda had sought out Master Hugh de Singleton, surgeon and bailiff of the manor. Two days later Alan’s corpse was discovered in the hedge, at the side of the track to St. Andrew’s Chapel. His throat had been torn out - his head was half severed from his body - and his face, hands, and forearms were lacerated with deep scratches.

Stellar story and reading
Revisado: 06-22-24
Perfect series of time long ago, read expertly. Can’t really ask for more. As the stories are read from notes/books rather than told from first person perspective, we get hints of what Hugh should or shouldn’t have done at a time. Culprit may be deduced earlier, but the story is more of a journey than just rushing to the end result.

Historia
After an adventurous season spent excavating at Dahshoor, and narrowly averting the clutches of the Master Criminal, Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody Emerson and her spouse prepare for a quiet summer in England. The social and domestic routine, though interrupted by the precocious escapades of their only child, Ramses, hardly seems much of a challenge for the indomitable Emersons.

Revisado: 06-10-24
Loved it all, characters, development, reading. Setting was in England for change, which allowed the writer to portrait English way of life. Brothers, nephews, Opium addicts parade as caricatures on the pages. It warmed my heart how she finally compared Ramses to Percy.

Historia
Amelia Peabody, archaeologist and woman extraordinaire, should have greeted the approaching excavation with transports of joy. Nothing in the world could compare with exploring the muddy, musty corridors of some bat-infested pyramid. And at Dahshoor, to which she was headed, there existed some particularly fine specimens.

Loving the series
Revisado: 05-22-24
Witty detective series keeps to be my favourite thing. I realised something new during the end note. The reader doesn’t use her normal voice for Mrs Emerson, which normally is the case for readers when the main character is of the same sex. Not an easy feat to accomplish.

The indomitable Amelia Peabody and her husband, known to many as "the Father of Curses", are into archaeology and mischief again. This third in the series brings the reader once more into Egypt and the shady world of black market antiquities. The winter excavation season has hardly yet begun when Amelia stumbles onto what looks suspiciously like a ring of thieves.

Historia
The Christmas season brings strange guests to the medieval nunnery of St. Frideswide's. They bear with them the badly mangled body of a villager, swearing they found the drunken fool lying in a ditch. But Meg, the victim's wife and a scullery maid of the cloister, thinks there are far fouler deeds afoot. As the players rehearse for the nativity, ancient scandals lick at their heels and dark desperation haunts Meg's steps as she finds cruel feudal laws threatening to strip away the lands that would support both her and her sons in the wake of her husband's death.

Splendid
Revisado: 04-21-24
Writing is very descriptive, but that was the only thing that gave it away as an old book in most places. For one of the first scandalous mystery books this was splendid. Feminist views in chapter 6 made me chuckle. Writer had to balance it by thrashing women right after that. Most likely to avoid being accused of promoting women’s rights. Did not buy that the brute would have washed and dressed wounds or cleaned clothes, but other than that, it was a very enjoyable listen.
