Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Vivid imagery
Revisado: 06-11-24
An in depth, excellently written, imaginative story with great narration. Each character is very well developed. It shows the many ways women are both different and alike, not just in personality, but culturally and spiritually as well. Each character's story is both tragic and uplifting. The backdrop in this one is very rich.

Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Lovely, tragic, and realistic
Revisado: 06-11-24
This book was a great story about family, the divide between women and men and the choices each faces. It shows the strong bonds and support between women along with their strength to persevere. It also shows how people come in and out of our lives as our own personal lives develop.
